How to deal with Tinnitus?

ImproveYourLifestyle profile image

Dear community,

I'm rather new with Tinnitus suffering since the end of August, first in one year, now both ears and it is unbearable.

I also got a feeling of Fullness and Blocked of the right ear but MRI and specialist consultant were not useful to find the cause just yet so trying to investigate seeing more specialists.

May I ask people in this community, what earphones / headphone they use with T?

My only hobby is salsa dancing, unfortunately I heard that I shouldn't go in loud places to avoid making the T worse, would you know what kind of protection I could use?

I'm trying to keep healthy with more Gym, meditation and breathing therapy but nothing seems to have a great impact on my T, what do or did you do to cope with this terrible condition?

I can’t comment on headphones as I don’t t use them, other posters might.

Your best source of information and tips about T is Tinnitus UK. Go to their website for a look around and maybe give them a ring. Don’t purchase anything that says it “cures” tinnitus, It won’t.

You are doing the right things to help yourself, but it can well take a long time to feel that you’ve habituated to T. Don’t despair!

Hi there. I'm sorry you're suffering. It's not easy to manage T in the early days but it sounds as if you're on the right track with relaxation techniques. It may feel as if you're not getting anywhere at first but you'll reap the benefits. Try to keep up Salsa dancing if you can. It's good to do the things you enjoy. Hearing protection is a must in noisy places. Check out Alpine. They have a range of plugs and muffs for all situations. Please know you won't always feel as bad as you do now.

So I believe more and more that tinnitus is hormone related. I came off HRT because it made my mild tinnitus unbearable however HRT can actually help some people with tinnitus. My brother is in his mid 50's and his tinnitus has been bad over the last couple of years so I've told him to ask for a hormone test because there could be a chance that it's linked to decreasing testosterone levels. I have read that some people on testosterone treatment have seen an improvement in their tinnitus. I had also read that men's estrogen levels actually increase as they age which would make sense re tinnitus as it was the increase in estrogen that has affected me and we have estrogen receptors in our ears. No one seems to have an answer/cure so anything is worth a shot!

I suspect it might be too Coxy .. Only I'm the opposite of you. My previously mild T got worse at the onset of the M. I don't take HRT. Maybe too much or too little oestrogen can have the same effect. Who knows?! 🙂

Yup after speaking to my GP and a menopause consultant it seems that estrogen either helps or hinders people with tinnitus! It has always been touted as helping people with tinnitus but there's more research and people like myself who's tinnitus has actually been made worse by HRT! I'm just hoping that when my estrogen levels drop (it's only been 6 weeks, I'm told it can take in excess of 3 months) my tinnitus goes back to its non bothersome levels!

Try Hijama and acupuncture treatment. Try Chinese & homeopathic medicine. I believe there is a cure but NHS/other not interested.

Darren6 profile image
Darren6 in reply toLight2021

There is no proof of this being a cure. There would be a ton of interest from the NHS and other Tinnitus research communities at the slightest hint of a cure. So this is baseless and should not be taking as good advice.

Acupuncture can work for some people to help some symptoms, but for others it has no affect at all.

I think most sufferers fall into a chasm of despair to begin with. But, please believe,as stated on here by others, you will come out the other side and will be able to function normally.Peace of mind, in my opinion is most important.Good luck

Hi folks. Just popping in to say that be it faith, science or some combination of both, the end goal in discussions like this is to identify things that help with tinnitus. If we can keep things civil and agree to have different opinions which don't get personal, that would be lovely.

Thanks for giving your location. I always have had the opinion not to fight it. It sounds easy to say but your awareness of it and focus will only make it seem worse.Try to relax and ride with it. I have played a game. Where to escape tinnitus. Yeas you can get breaks from it. Try focusing elsewhere. Prime example spectating at a football match, horse racing. There's a couple of hours you won't notice it.

You are also right not to have anything noisy competing with tinnitus. How about some relaxing mood music. Remember one big thing, you are not alone.

Hugs

I've been in the despair phase of tinnitus and oh boy it is not beautiful. As people in previous post have already stated, it will get better with time. I would add to the conversation that it is important to understand what impact tinnitus is causing to your psychology. From it's start your brain/mind will start to create some habits of actions and of thinking around tinnitus and in most cases they will be avoidant behavior patterns and limiting beliefs.

In my case I believe my improvement has started because of the following:

- I've keep myself socially active

- I've reflected on that having tinnitus is my new "reality" and I should stop comparing and wish to experience my life based on memories of how it was when I did not have it. (This idea generally comes from most sources as "learning to accept it")

- I've reflected on being understanding about the fact that tinnitus has some effects that I have to deal with (It seems that around 2 days per week I would have a spiked tinnitus that is louder and more disturbing and I am ok with this, it is my new "reality". On those days it is ok to do less, it is ok to fell tired, it is ok to fell a bit more irritated etc.)

- I've figured out tinnitus has affected my confidence regarding the quality of my work. I work with a lot of data and system configuration aspects and I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist. Tinnitus seems to affect my capacity to focus and also to remember data and that created a lot of emotional struggle regarding my work. I've learned to be less demanding with myself about my work, I've learned to be understanding if I am not going to remember something. The most positive aspect on this is that once I've understood how tinnitus has changed my perspective on this aspect, I've found that it wasn't as bad as I actually believed to be during the despair phase. Yes my concentration and capacity to focus is impacted but not to the extent that I was seeing. (Resolve/come to peace with the fears that are brought by tinnitus)

- I've never stopped researching and looking into studies about tinnitus. (Know what you are dealing with, understand what is available out there.)

-I've learned to reach out to people. I tended to be the type of person that would rely on my intellect, if I had a problem, I do the work to understand it, I will test methods and I will fix for myself. Other people should not be affected by my struggles. On the days when tinnitus was affecting me the most, I've allowed myself to actually fell low, fell depressed in front of my friends. I would generally put a strong face. I've reached out to this group 7 months ago. I have some friends that I speak with them about it, and how I believe it affects me. I am mindful to not over speak about it though because that can actually end up making you think more about it and become more focused on the tinnitus sound. (Reach out to your community for support)

-I've understood that with this condition it is hard to get empathy and even understanding from most people. It is a niche symptom and it is hard for people to imagine the day in day out of dealing with this condition, I would have probably had a difficult time really understanding if I was not a sufferer of it. I really appreciate those people that do seem to present empathy and I make sure the make them aware of it. ( assure you have correct expectations regarding tinnitus)

- I've changed my working arrangements. My contract was for me to work remotely from home. Having to deal with tinnitus in the same environment everyday, affected my psychology quite a lot. I've started to become less and less sociable, because I would deal with it for 8 hours while working then I would not want to go out or do anything else. After dealing with it for around 10 months it just became obvious that it was not working for me so I've asked my management if I can change to Hybrid work structure because of my tinnitus. I was lucky that my company had an office for another team in London and they could find me a space there. Now I work 2 days from home and 3 days from office. (if possible aim to make the environmental that would help you with your tinnitus)

- I've invested in some white noise machines. So if that works for you, you might want to look into some of them. At home I have "Sound Oasis Bluetooth Tinnitus Sound Therapy System" (very fancy name, in reality it is a Bluetooth speaker with some nature sound saved on a card) that has a specific sound of rain that is helping to mask my tinnitus. It isn't working all the time as when I have a spike in tinnitus I just have to deal with it, but even then it seems to me that if I have it on, it is a bit more bearable. I also have a "Yogasleep Dohm Classic Original Noise Machine". When I first started using them, I was using both...for me it seemed to work better in masking my tinnitus as it gave a feeling of a more natural cacophony of sounds then with only one noise machine source. Now I use only the Sound Oasis one. It is on on most days. (experiment and make use of some solutions that are out there)

- I've searched on the internet for stories from people that have managed to deal with tinnitus, to understand what are they doing regarding it. One has to be mindful to not believe in all cures that are presented out there, because there are many reasons for one's tinnitus so something that would resolve a tinnitus due to TMJ would not resolve a tinnitus cause by some middle ear problem. Also, there are many people that might want to take advantage of a tinnitus sufferer. It is very easy to sell cures to people that are despairing. The more you would despair the more alluring some solutions might seem. I would say do your due diligence before deciding on something. (filter the sources that you are looking for in regards to this issue)

Tinnitus is not the same for everyone and some of my processes are not going to work on your specific tinnitus. We are all at different stages in life and have different worldviews and that would also affect how we deal with it. Because of that I will say, keep searching, keep inquiring, keep testing, keep adapting until you will find what will work for you. In my experience it is a blend of working on ones own psyche and using some proven therapies that would bring the best results.

I hope you've found something useful from what I've shared.

Hi Norcotter - I can relate.

When I'm programming (currently mostly JS) I often listen to Spotify - they have a raft of tinnitus-targeted tracks.

Right now it's 'Bring Calm To Your Ears' by the HMA

Good luck

Hi there I've only been suffering a few months and it is difficult to get used to isn't it. I've found plantago drops from a.vogel have really helped the fluid/fullness in my ears and also used Otovent nasal balloon which has really helped balance the pressure in my ears.
