London based audiologists

I am new to this group. I recently had a sudden onset of Tinnitus around 4 weeks ago. A high pitched tone that is constantly present, and as like many others, it is worse in the nights and mornings. Getting out into the drone of traffic etc helps mask it but it returns as soon as I am in a quiet space. I have had a hearing test with mild hearing loss around the 4k range, and this does not affect my day to day life that I can discern. Unfortunately my job (as a sound editor) requires me to sit in silence looking for sound effects to lay up to TV shows and listening to detailed sounds throughout the day (not necessarily loud ones thankfully at the moment). I have just been told by my GP that a referral to an ENT specialist could take up to 3 months to a year. So I need to see some one sooner and there are so many audiologists and experts out there that I wondered if anyone had good experiences they could share of London based specialists in the private sector? I don't have a lot of money to throw at it but at least some sort of personalised consultation to give me an idea of what I may need to do deal with the noise. I have no personal contacts who can recommend anyone. Any help gratefully received. Thanks.

Hi SoundCollector,

There will be many London based audiologists that people with experience can recommend. The person that helped me with my tinnitus and hyperacusis was a lady called Gladys Akinseye, you can find her at drgladys.co.uk/.

Good luck

Darren

Hi SoundCollector

Further to Darren's comments, you might like to look at our list of corporate members - tinnitus.org.uk/join-the-ca.... The Small Corporate Members list has some audiology practitioners based in London - I Am Ear , for example.

Before u go, what do u expect from them?

Im not sure if that is a question to me or to the original poster?

If you are asking me then I would say the expectation from seeing an audiologist is being given confidence that there are things you can do to manage tinnitus. This could be sound therapy, hearing aids, stress management etc. The turning point for me was definitely after seeing an audiologist.

They will still insist on seeing an ENT and most likely an MRI but assuming these will be clear then the audiologist is more likely to be able to offer help with Tinnitus than the ENT. And as they are private, you can get to see someone soon, which is what most people need at the beginning of tinnitus onset.
