Hearing Aids

Hi I finally had my appointment for audiology come through. I had to have hearing aids as I have high frequency moderate hearing loss. Anyway I have been wearing them for a week now and I'm still getting used to them but I have found that I no longer hear my tinnitus noise whilst I'm wearing them. When I take them out to sleep I can hear my noise again but it's not any worse. So I'm hopeful that at least some of the time I don't hear it and it's proving to be a lovely break....also I can hear everything else much better now so I'm really pleased.

such great news! Hope you don’t mind but you say that when you have the hearing aids in you are no longer aware of your tinnitus - can I ask how it makes you feel ? Is it as dramatic as you imagined it would be to no longer hear tinnitus at least during the day?

Hi BournvilleIt feels really great to hear again. I didn't realise how much I was struggling to hear conversations and it took me a couple of days to realise there was no high pitched wail in my ear as I was adjusting to wearing them. They were a bit tickly and irritating at first. I feel so relieved and I feel more confident when I'm out walking with my dog as I couldn't hear anything coming up behind me ie runners, bikers and I have been really startled even frightened by them but now I can hear them and move out of the way before they get too close. I can hear my feet treading on gravel and the rustling noise when I walk over old leaves on the ground in the forest it's amazing! So yes it really has been quite dramatic hearing normally.

I think tinnitus wears you out and it's hard work day after day habituating to it and trying to ignore it and get on with everyday life. Now I just pop the hearing aids in and its gone and I can hear everything clearly its fabulous. So I would recommend trying them to anyone who has tinnitus and hearing loss because they might make a big difference to your quality of life. The audiologist told me that if you have high frequency hearing loss the tinnitus may occur because your brain is trying to fill in the gaps in your hearing which was interesting. I'm not sure how true this is but it seemed a reasonable explanation.

I still get tinnitus at night but it doesn't seem any worse and I'm managing to sleep. I do get sleepless nights now and then and tinnitus is unbearable on those nights but stressing about not sleeping makes it louder and I'm not expecting any changes in that situation to be honest.

Overall its been a very positive experience getting hearing aids and I was a bit scared of being diagnosed and having to wear them so it's fantastic that it's worked out so well.

Sorry to drone on this is a long post but I hope it helps anyone who reads it.
