Tinnitus silver bullet

Dear All

Is there any such thing as an effective non addictive sleep aid which can be taken on a regular basis and which doesn't increase tinnitus noise ??

or a sedating antidepressant to assist sleep which doesn't increase tinnitus noise ??

I am still searching ?

I need either of the above so any input would be much appreciated in relation to finding this silver bullet.

Even a less than perfect tarnished silver bullet would be good

Thanks

Peter

There is a supplement called Unplug which my nutritionist recommended to me . I cannot say it helped me but a lot of her patients have success with it.You have to go to specialist outlets....maybe The Natural Dispensary in Stroud have it....but look it up on-line. The Natural Dispensary take on-line and telephone orders.

I now take Magnesium with CoQ10 and Hawthorn complex by Terra Nova.....2 in the evening and that seems to help. But I never sleep for longer than 3 hours at a time...that has gradually grown as it used to be 90 mins at best.

Personally I didn't get on with any of the herbal teas or OTC herbal sleep aids as they made me feel nauseous but I gather the best tea out there is called Sleepy Time.

Im sure others 0n the chat have their own recommendations

This is just my knowledge, but might be a starting point

Hi Peter. On my GP's advice I took Phenergan 2 - 3 times a week for three months. It's an antihistamine. It worked for me every time. I now take 5 HTP every night. It's a natural supplement - not perfect but if I wake up I go back to sleep more easily than I used to .

Thanks again DL Check my response to Melissa Dream

It did try Phenergan but I seemed to habituate after a couple of times

Will check out 5HTP

Hi Peter. I read your response below . I've had similar problems with sleep at one stage. Feelings of fear & panic as soon as I got into bed. It's an anxiety response - as you say . Not at all unusual. I found it resolved as I got more used to the loudness of my T . I hope you find something to tide you over until things improve .

Thanks doglover1973My problem is that prior to being on mirtazapine ( which I have been on for 3 weeks now) ,I could go for nights being totally totally alert ,changing rooms ,having cups of tea and not even sleeping a wink even although totally and absolutely exhausted with palpitations

You would think that mother nature would kick in and make you sleep but she doesn't unfortunately !!

I have sort of habituated after 3 weeks to the Mertazapine as the initially good sleeps have tapered off and I now have a twilight sleeps being neither awake nor asleep and getting up in the morning bleary eyed .If I come off the mertazapine ,I need to change over for something straight away that will give me some sleep even if minimal as i don't want go go through the horrid situation of being awake for days and nights with not even 5 minutes sleep where I cease to function and dare not drive .

The annoying thing is that before last August when tinnitus appeared ,I used to sleep like a log .I prided my self of being able to have catnaps any time any where .Even at lunch time when on hikes ,I could lie on rough ground and have a power nap .Gosh one extreme to the other thanks to MR T

So my conundrum is what to take once I taper off mirtazapine to give me at least some sleep so that I am not a zombie

I really appreciate taking the time for all of your replies doglover1973

take a look at the Huberman Lab on YT - one of his first videos was on mastering sleep. I would highly recommend.

Hello doglover1973

If you don't mind I shall fire a couple of questions at you please?

1. Just wondering how long the sleep benefits of 5HTP take to kick in please to give you a mediocre sleep ?2. Do you habituate to 5HTP over time so that the sleep benefits become less effective ?

3. 5B/N 5 -HTP 100mg (5-Hydroxytryptophan ) Not sure which is best ,this brew or your straight 5-HTP ?

I am putting questions on the forum because I need an alternative strategy to get some sleep when I get off my 7.5 mg mirtazapine

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter. I know how you feel. I would 've done anything to find the silver bullet - as you say. It's tough having endless sleepless nights. I started 5 HTP about 6 months into troublesome T so I was l already sleeping a little better . Over the next 6 months I returned to near normal sleep pattern. I don't think I habituated but couldn't say for sure. I've not heard of 5B/N 5 HTP . Just the 5 HTP .

You could take your doctor’s recommendation, if they prescribe such a thing for you, but bearing in mind that the sort of stuff the doc prescribed doesn’t give you “good” sleep. The sleep it gives doesn’t give the brain the sort of sleep it, the brain, needs to sort out what’s happened I the previous awake time. If this convoluted sentence makes any sense whatsoever??So you can buy stuff over the counter, as others have said, but my impression from other reading is that it depends on the individual. Certainly I bought some sleep aid from a reputable supplements company, Healthspan, and it did nothing for me. Your pharmacist might have some insight?

Melissa Dream - sleep supplement is good - with supplement beneficail for tinnitus and chamomile and lemon balm. Also reduce screen time before bed and wind down methids

Hello Melissa Thanks for getting back to me .

i am happy to give anything a go .

As a result of getting fairly severe tinnitus about six months ago ,I have developed an underlying anxiety problem that manifests itself as very pronounced heart palpitations as soon as my head hits the pillow .Really quite ridiculous as I can lie in bed reading and as soon as I turn the light off the old heart fires up . It is a conditioned subconscious response I know . I have been on 7.5 mg of mirtazapine for the last 3 weeks .It is supposed to be a sleep aid .However I only get intermittent twilight sleep with multiple awakenings plus milder palpitations .

The palpitations keep me awake .

i probably need a sledgehammer to make me sleep :-))

do u read with a kindle before bed ? my husband he reads with a kindle which has a bright white bright screen which actually can be detrimental to sleep - he doesnt sleep that well and he doesnt have tinnitus. I reduce all screens at least 1 hour before bed

Hello Suz26Thanks i believe that you can get blue light glasses which helps if looking at the screen before bedtime

Anything is worth a try

the sleep aid is called Melissa Dream - with magnesium. L-theanine and B Complex which are good for tinnitus - you should try to come off the prescription meds gradually and check if the med u are taking has no interactions with supplementsthis is the best I have found with very few additives

DR650SE in reply toSuz_2

Thanks for replying Suz26 .And here is me thinking that Melissa Dream is a person!!!There are so many other supplements as well .

l tryptophan with 5htp as well as both of them separately

Gaba and L- theanine

It is difficult to know which is best suited for the individual as trial and error takes so long particularly if suffering chronic insomnia in the meantime
