Hi Yogachamp - there are around 43 posts on Betahistine and tinnitus on the forum, which I'll link to here, in lieu of any current responses - healthunlocked.com/bta/sear...
Hi Yogachamp Do you know if betahistine is an option for those of us with tinnitus and not Meniers disease please?
Does it help you sleep ?
Thanks
Peter
Hi PeterI am sorry I don’t really know about Betahistine I read about it in a book saying it could help with Tinnitus that was why I was enquiring . I myself am not keen on taking medication but everyone is different . There are always side effects to medication & that’s the worry .
What helps me to sleep is Camomile tea & deep breathing exercises . Hope you find something that works for you .
Also because my brain scan shows some issues with something not quite right I am being offered a lumbar puncture which I am not sure to have or not so I will need to discuss this with my GP .
Hi Yogachamp. Been wondering how you are getting on!
The National Institute for Clinical Evidence (NICE) produced guidance for GPs two years ago for patients attending for tinnitus. You can look at the guidance by googling NICE and putting tinnitus in the search box. Somewhere in that guidance it specifically says NOT to prescribe betahistine in the first instance for T. Though if you have other issues at the same time I expect a GP might prescribe.
Over the past couple of years I’ve seen reference to betahistine on Health Unlocked so if you only get a few replies to your post you can put this in the HU search box and see if you get anything helpful.
Hi HappyrosieThanks for your reply ,
I am doing Ok apart from my Tinnitus which still bothers me a lot , although I am trying to just learn to live with it as what other choice do we have . I got all clear on my cancer & have to have regular skin checks & scans . I find keeping busy is the best thing for my T . How are you doing ?
I’m on a complete high today! Oncologist has said I can soon come off the anti-cancer pills I’ve been taking for seven years. The side effect is, amongst other things, muscle and joint pains. (Then I have to wean myself off the morphine-substitute I’ve been on for several years. That won’t be fun.) But, whoopee!
Thanks Fantastic News I am really happy for you 😁 Good luck with weaning of the tablets . How are you doing with your Tinnitus ?
T has rarely been a problem for me - it’s very loud (over the sound of a car going at sixty) and annoying cos sometimes peoples’ voices are obscured, but it’s rarely upset me.Glad to hear your C is clear other than checks.
Aw wish I could feel like thatHopefully one day , did it take time for you to get to that stage . I am having more days where I cope so I have to take that for now .
I had 2 courses of serc, (few weeks each time) for tinnitus, fullness in ear, hearing loss. Each time I noticed improvement in overall symptoms including tinnitus.
I’m also on cyclizine for nausea/vertigo and was told not to take that at the same time. I was told serc would help me as they thought I may have fluid in my ear
I found it helpful checking the medication leaflet which explains how serc works and what it’s for. Unfortunately my symptoms are back, but it definitely helped at the time.
I’ve been waiting for help with ENT after being referred 2 years ago. I was grateful to have a ent doctor last week who referred me for tinnitus management, hearing assessment and balance clinic.
I hope you get some help soon and relief from symptoms.
Hi cat886Thank you for your response , I might try discussing this with my doctor to see what they think. So did your tinnitus Just come back when you stopped taking the tablets . I guess there are side effects with long term medication too so that’s a problem . Good luck with your ENT appointment .
Thanks, hope you get things sorted soon. Yes, I think it treated the underlying problem causing tinnitus (suspected pressure in ear), but not a long term solution my GP said. Will let you know anything useful from the appointment.
HiThank you yes , I sometimes feel like my ears have pressure like a full feeling . Trouble is if you took them & it stopped it would be horrible having the awful noise coming back if you had to come of them .
Yes please keep me updated & wish you well

Hi Yogachamp - I have been on Serc for 30 plus Years now 4 a day got Meniere's, and Serc was only tablet that eased it, not until on 4 a day though. good luck do think best option.
Thank you Bristolboy5e I have heard it helps with Menieress did you also have Tinnitus ?
Hi,A few weeks after T appeared my GP gave me some serc. It had no effect, so after another few weeks he doubled the dose. A few days later T in my right ear stopped and in my left ear the volume decreased (who knows if this was as a result of serc?). There were no further improvements and eventually I stopped taking serc. I have tried it again a couple of times over the years with no improvements at all.
Cheers
Kenny
Thanks KennySo did it only stop temporary whilst you were taking it & come back when you stopped . So I take it it’s not really a long term cure then
Thanks Laney
Hi Laney,After I stopped there was no change, my right ear had no T and my left ear had the same reduced volume.
Best wishes
Kenny
Thanks KennySounds like it could be worth a try then
I know everyone is different , so you just have to try what you can . So are you not to bothered by your tinnitus anymore then.
Laney
Hi Laney,
It was spring 2001 when T came along. All these years later I still have it in my left ear. I'm almost constantly aware of it but it doesn't affect me that much unlike the early times when sleep was almost impossible, trying to concentrate was very difficult as well and my general mood was very low. I still sometimes have to use my under pillow speaker to aid sleep but usually manage without it. Altho' I guess that I've habituated I still dearly wish that T didn't exist.
I wish you well
Kenny
Thanks KennyYes I guess your right , at the end of the day your brain must just accept it & that in turn stops you going into that dreadful panic state , which I had so bad at the beginning like most people. I have good days & bad now & just try & get on with it .
Like you I also wish it would just go away .
Laney
For me personally Serc has had no impact. T for 10+ years taking Serc for maybe 7 of those years. Hey maybe it might be more effective for you. All the best.
Thank youLike you say it’s different for everybody
Suppose it’s worth a try , how come you still take it if it has no improvement though .
My ent advised me that although it might appear to be ineffective it may prevent it from getting worse.
Just to note: I have a brain injury after surgery so that too may be having an impact.
I am awaiting hearing aids to see if it can help.
Hi there!.......yes I have been taking Beta Histine for several months. Before starting it, my frequency of vertigo attacks with vomiting, high level of volume in my left ear, and generally feeling like shit was just a part of my life. Since I've been taking 16mg 3x daily, I have only had one vertigo attack with vomiting. So......there's that. People can draw their own conclusions since I am not a doctor. Also, I have had 5 visits with a Chief Medical Officer at a Western States Chiropractic College here in Portland. He has completed 4 sessions of Low Level Laser Therapy in my left ear. The current research suggests the laser promotes cell growth and repair mechanisms ( I can't quote the entire research here) through photo chemical processes. In a nutshell, after 4 sessions of laser therapy I have noticed a decrease in volume and intensity in my affected ear. Before there was a constant roar, now just a lower volume that stays at same level. My ability to concentrate on things has improved, and not as distracted as much. Also, upper cervical manipulation is being done. Finally, at some point they may use fingers to sweep eustachian tube on left side. I will keep you posted.
Thank you Swimmer 65This is really helpful , sounds like you are having some positive effects from your treatment which is brilliant especially the laser therapy in your ear , not sure they offer it here .
Think I will be having a discussion with my GP around the possibility of trialing Serco to see if it helps me at all .
Yes please keep me updated on your progress , I always love to hear of success stories .

Hi! I don’t know about Serc, since I live in Romania, but I have been taking Betaserc for more than 12 years. I interrupt it for a fee weeks, but I take 24-mg Betaserc twice daily. It hasn’t cured T, but I can cope with these annoying noises in my ears.
I wish you all the best!
i agree i don't like medication but it gets to a point with sleep deprivation that you have no choice at times
Sleep deprivation is an acknowledged form of torture :-((
Lack of sleep and loud T. Like you Yogachamp i know all about it unfortunately
