Tinnitus post microsuction

Hi All,

Has anyone experienced tinnitus after micro-suction? Had it in both ears 2 weeks ago due to hard wax blocking both ears. Didn’t experience tinnitus has first but for the last week or so I’ve had ringing in (I think both ears) although it’s difficult to tell if it is in both?

Just wondering if it’s permanent or if it is a ‘common’ temporary side effect of the procedure that will settle in a few weeks?

Thanks in advance.

Wouldn't it be better as the forum Administrator to direct this poster to the BTA page about earwax and tinnitus, rather than your generic response?

Hi

You say you had wax blocking both ears? Did you have the ringing before you had the micro Suction?

No, not that I can remember? And certainly not like this. Maybe after a night out or a concert I’d come home and hear the ringing but it would be gone in the morning.

I’ve just been the Drs and they have advised exercises for vertigo and medication, betahistine 8mg 3 times a day said likely the liquid in my ears has been disturbed through micro suction.

Dr said it can be a side effect and quote ‘easily rectified’, I have been advised to give it a month and if not go back. Has anyone had success with these? Everything I’ve read says there are no medications to cure it?

Thanks

Microsuction should not cause tinnitus, it’s a safe procedure or it wouldn’t be done, although usually it’s not advisable to be carried out unless you have used something for a couple of weeks to soften the wax beforehand, such as olive oil.

Do you have any other symptoms such as ear fullness or muffled hearing? ETD (Eustachian tube dysfunction) can cause ringing in the ear.

A wax blocked ear can also cause ringing but you mentioned you didn’t have it before so it can’t be that. It seems strange it’s started a week later, I would have thought if the micro suction had caused it, it would have been noticeable straight away.

Have you been experiencing dizziness? I see the doctor has prescribed medication for that.

It could be you have an ear infection or another condition which affects the ears, lots which cause tinnitus.

If it’s caused by an infection or ETD it should go once everything is cleared but it’s important you get the correct treatment first.

Good luck, I hope you get sorted soon x

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I used ear calm for 5 days prior and the Dr used lots of olive oil when doing the procedure as the wax was embedded and very hard. Hoping it’s just my ears getting used to all the new sounds. GP said my ears are clear so no infection??

I had my right ear micro suctioned a few weeks back, all has been fine since and I’ve had no real problems apart from the first couple of weeks the ear was slightly sensitive to loud noises and I found I couldn’t use my hairdryer or hoover as that made my ear ring. It’s settled down now though.

I have ETD at the moment, I’ve had it since November, I get intermittent noises in my ears, high pitched rings and hissing.

I also had a blocked left eardrum and a loud vibrating car engine noise in my ear 24/7 , I had 5 weeks of olive oil treatment and 2 attempts at my doctors surgery to flush the ear before it came away. I had the noise for 5 more weeks before it finally stopped.

That ear was very sore and took weeks before things sounded somewhat normal again.

I have never been so relieved in my life but it has made me extremely anxious and the ETD noises are very scary too.

The ears can take a lot of time to heal, my guess is with your wax being so compacted they will still be tender inside.

I really hope yours is temporary, please keep us updated x

most people talk of tinnitus as a ringing but in my case its a deep hum like a fog alert noise and I can temp. stop it for a few seconds by shaking my head or changing my head position last night slept on right side[always sleep on my left] with sleeping tablets and on waking up the t is much much worse, so did lying on the affected ear make it worse,? some years ago a lazer op on my eyes went wrong I was in a lot of pain and the vibration/inflammation sound I tried to explain was like a roaring across my eyes , well this t is exactly the same noise so is it caused by inflammation ? in which case would anti inflammatories help? I take one a day, maybe two a day would bring some relief, otherwise I wont be around much longer as already I am planning hoarding sleeping pills, there is no way I could cope with this in my head for always
