Hi I'm very new hear. Hope you are well.

Just interested to know thought about Amitriptyline ? Or other experiences on them. Were the side effects tolerable and did you notice the difference with Tiinitus

I used Amitriptyline can’t say that it helped my tinnitus.Used it mostly for neck/nerve issues and with the hope it could ease the tinnitus. Was also prescribed it to try help my mood. Can honestly say for me it never helped and I felt worse on it.Listen that doesn’t me to say it won’t help for you as were all different.Look in to Psilocybin/ketamine and all the research that’s going on around those. They say within 5 years the NHS will be prescribing it along with psychotherapy as it will be the next big game changer in psychiatry depression and addictions

It’s just trying to piece your own jigsaw together

Good luck stay safe!

Thankyou for your reply it's so crazy how different peoples bodies react. Unfortunately I've been experiencing depression and anxiety for a fair while but was never on anything and this last year with Tinnitus coming on I'm having a super tough time. I've tried one SSRI and one SNRI and have had horrific unbearable side effects my doctor insisted on stopping each of them immediately. So it's been tough not being on the path to at least feeling like I'm being helped. And of course going on and off things is so draining in itself on the body and mind.

I have used Amitriptyline for IBS issues a few years back only 10mg but know for antidepressant effect it is at a much higher dose.

It's very hard dealing with this and also the T.

Hi Kamh

I was on Amitriptyline just for four days about 20 years ago. I stopped because it put me into a state of zombied depression. I did drink alcohol on them which is obviously very silly and I think made them particularly bad. Personally it’s the worst experience I’ve had. I hope that you have a better experience with them..

Oh no thankyou for the feedback. Did you find anything to help with depression or anxiety not necessarily the Tinnitus.

My go to fix for anxiety spikes, for the past few years is pidolate magnesium. In ampoules form, product name Mag2 from Cooper/ cooperation pharmaceutical. It’s fast to kick in and no side effects.. good luck

I'll have to find an equivalent here in Australia. Thankyou for that.

Same...your phrase 'zombied depression' is just perfect. I was given these tablets for vestibular migraine but had adverse effects. Like you I was flattened. xx

Thankyou for the reply. I have been on 10mg once before for IBS and am thinking about going on them again as I have had bad response to SSRI and SNRI but the dosage for depression is so much higher so it does scare me a little. I don't think it will make a difference to my Tinnitus but I need something to help put me in a better mind frame to start learning how to deal with it. Feel like my life and families hasn't been out on hold with this it's crazy.

Yeh we’re all different Kamh but we’re all so similar and connected!

The anti-depressant route path for some is a slippery slope but how do you know there not for us?

We can only try if nothing else is working

You mention IBS anxiety and depression along with tinnitus

Well they can all be connected

For example initially the IBS can be helped with a FODMAP diet or probiotics and change of diet

They say a high percentage of IBS sufferers could have SIBO too (small intestinal bacterial over growth if they have suffered gastroenteritis before) which both even individually can lead to low nutrients and vitamin absorption

That can lead to depression and anxiety as they say the majority of the receptors for dopamine and serotonin are not in the brain but in the stomach

The brain is directly connected to the stomach via the vagus nerve again they say which can be under stimulated through this

It t can be manually stimulated through deep breathing exercises meditation probiotics good diet cold water humming singing laughter massage exercise

Get where this is going Kahm? (Hey is that Urdu?)

When were down and depressed with anxiety and the meds aren’t working they send us on to CBT or psychotherapy which have a lot of very good advice on self help that works and well they don’t say but it’s stimulating your vagus nerve

Maybe we should be doing all that first or while the trying the meds?

Not saying the meds don’t work but for me I felt worse

I’m cold Turkey a week now and feel like a bag of faeces

I felt like that on the meds but I am sleeping better

Also the CBT has been a great help and I’ve came this far and I know if it keep busy and at it I can go farther

We all have a deep resolve within and you have too Kahm!

Just take it slowly and find your own jigsaw with help and advice from doctors friends and family

The bogey man tinnitus!!!!!!???????

Aaaaaargh!!!!!

Ooft if i could only get my hands around Mr Tinnitus’s Granny Smith (adams apple)

Would I? Yup and very slowly too! lol

Talking about the neck

They say anxiety and depression can cause tinnitus

We don’t sleep we’re all tensed up fatigued and that can affect our neck muscles jaw and arteries with tension which can affect our hearing

So if we start the diet and progress could it reduce the anxiety and depression and also the tinnitus?

I know one thing it for definite it’s not going to be unhealthy and can only help and that’s my route not suitable for everyone but that’s where I am at the moment

Hope things get better soon Kahm!

Good luck!

50Mg of Amitriptyline didn't change tinnitus at all. It does help to get to sleep though.

Hi Kamh. I have had severe tinnitus for several years now, mainly on the right side and I can cope with it most of the time but it spikes fairly regularly and that's when I turn to Amitrip.I take one 10mg tablet around 8-8.30pm and by 10pm, I can feel the effect of it and I get a good nights sleep despite the head noises. I sometimes feel a bit drowsy the morning after but just take a little bit longer to come to!

That's the only time I take it and only for a few days until the spike subsides. I would say it has a calming effect on the nervous system but in my experience, it does not work specifically in reducing tinnitus. I have a few coping techniques which I employ but I think the best way to cope is by keeping busy and diverting the brains focus onto something else, other than the constant noise in your head. I wish you well.

Hi Kahm. I took one lot of Amitriptily (about a months worth). Was worried to take it at first because one of the side effects can be tinnitus!!! It didnt make my tinnitus either better or worse but I did feel more relaxed about things and seemed to sleep better. Hope this helps
