Betahistinr 8mg Tablets

I was taking these tablets to try to assist with the constant zooming noise in both of my ears but they made me feel awful. I suffered from a headache above my eyebrows every morning I woke up and severe pain in my sinuses which felt like they could bleed at any moment. Had anyone else experienced this.

I would be grateful for some feedback please from anyone who has used this medication.

Hi Mel

Thank you for posting on the forum. I can't share any experience of that medication with you, other than to signpost you to a piece written on our website by the ENT surgeon John Phillips - tinnitus.org.uk/betahistine...

They have been prescribed as a way to help people living with Meniere's Disease to manage their tinnitus symptoms, and that may have influenced why some GPs still prescribe the medication to patients with tinnitus.

I'm sure the community will be able to share their experiences with you.

Take care,

Pat

Hi Pat

Thank you for the article and which has just made very interesting reading.

I have tried Betahistine on and off for a year without much success and I won’t be using it again.

I found that my tinnitus got much better when I switched to a vegetarian diet for a month or so. When I started eating meet again and other foods my tinnitus has increased.

Kind regards

Lisa

You’ve had a reply, Melons, and I would add that doctors are now NOT recommended to prescribe this medication for tinnitus. If you live in the UK you can go back to your doctor, if you wish, and tell them that new advice was published by NICE about a year ago, which they might have missed because of Covid, and this advice recommends what pathways that GPs should follow when a patient presents with T.

Best of luck, and keep us posted.

Hi Happyrosie

Thank you very much for the advice you have provided here.

I will be returning to my GP as I thought that the medication was causing more harm than good!

Kind regards

Lisa

Hi

I’ve been on 16mg tablets three a day - my tinnitus is a pulsing sound as well as the regular high pitched sounds - they seem to suppress it sufficiently for me, I’ve been taking it for a month now with no major tinnitus occurring at all but I still try and avoid any situations that may trigger it.

Hi Melons70. I have been on Betahistine 8mg for about three months now but don't feel it has helped or worsened my T, so I don't intend taking any more once this course has ended. Previously I was on low dose Amytriptyline. It didn't partucularly help with the Tinnitus but I did sleep better.

Hi

I agree that it does not help much to be honest. The side effects worried me because of how severe the headaches were and the pain in my sinuses. As soon as I stopped the tablets the symptoms went away. I have had periods of silence usually in the mornings at the moment. My tinnitus also completely went away for 6 months or more and started again in February after I came off of a vegetarian, no salt or sugar diet for a month. I think my diet is the key to probably solving my issue.

Kind regards

Liss
