Hello
I've had tinnitus on and off most of my adult life and never really had much problem with it. On occasion it would be very loud but would soon go. However for the past year I have been experiencing an additional sound in my left ear and during lockdown it has become much much worse. Its not there all of the time but seems to turn up randomly then lasts a one or two days. It started off sounding like there was a car left running/ticking over outside but eventually the sound now sounds like a the car is in my ear! The only way I can get a bit of relief is to plug my ear with my finger for a few seconds which then causes pain.
My left ear has always gave me bother regarding outer infections, swimmers ear and the canal seems smaller than my right ear (I can't wear ear buds as they are too big). I did have my ear checked 18 months ago due to pain and Dr said the ear was fine and prescribed a spray which eased the pain.
Recently I had an episode where I woke in the early hours and the noise was unbearable. As soon as the drs opened that morning I called. Dr suggested a blood test to check my thyroid and iron levels, apparently that can affect tinnitus. She also said due to covid-19 she was unable to refer me for a scan to check for tumors. The bloody test came back fine for thyroid and iron level was extremely low so I'm now taking iron supplements.
The only thing that I've recently worked out is that silence seems to be a trigger. If I keep the radio or TV on it helps keep it away. My ears are very sensitive to sounds and I love my silence so this isn't great for me but it's better than that sound.
Anyone else experience this or can offer any advice?
Thanks, Annabel
