Tinnitus support groups

Does anyone on here belong to any tinnitus support groups and if so are they helpful? There aren't any near me and was wondering if it was worth looking into setting one up.

Nicola :)

The best I can say is that they don't do any harm. There were none near me (West Yorkshire), which I found incredible given the population density around Leeds / Bradford / Wakefield / Huddersfield etc, until the Audiology team from Bradford hospital set one up earlier this year. However, there doesn't appear to be much appetite for it - we've had 3 meetings, maybe a dozen people at the first one, 7 or 8 at the second and then just 4 at the latest one.

The BTA can help you to set one up and contribute to initial costs (I think), so I would say go for it - there might be other people in your area thinking 'why is there no support group near me?'

Hello Nicola,

I have been going to the Stoke-on-Trent Support Group for just over two years now. We are only a small group - lots of folk have come and gone but we do have regulars who come most weeks.

We sometimes have people who come and talk to us and answer questions - audiologists, a tinnitus hearing therapist and we also have visits from trainee doctors from Keele University.

We`ve also had a lady who teaches yoga who showed us deep breathing and meditation. And we also have relaxation sessions. And the two ladies who run the group have lots of helpful information.

Some weeks we just sit and chat but we`re there for each other and it does help to be with others who know exactly how we all feel.

I`m glad I found our group anyway.

Love Lynne xx

Hi Nicola

If you would be interested in setting up a tinnitus support group, we can help, and provide some money to help in the initial stages. Please give my colleague Colette a call on 0114 250 9933 or email colette@tinnitus.org.uk, or drop me a private message with your details (don't put your number or email here) and I can pass them on.

Best wishes

Nic
