Hi Drumcraw was it sensible to put yourself in that environment if you knew you had tinnitus? Even though you wore ear plugs I can only say your ears must be very sensitive I hope your tinnitus settles down but it may take a while if it has been exposed to the gig you did take care. D

ive played for 50 years never had any probs with my ears till 4 years ago and have been told its ok by numerous audiologists and recently an e.n.t. surgeon and everyone you speak to says the same dont stop what you enjoy doing but i dont play as much now anyway instead of 12 gigs amonth i do maybe 12 a year. but my T, is loud all the timeeven the period s when i dont play my life is upside down as everything i did was connected to music, my ears arent sensitive at all dont have hyperacusis anyway have agreat new year and ORRA BEST from scotland!

Hope it's better today Crawford. Keep calm, get out in the great outdoors and when indoors surround yourself with quiet sounds, set at a level below your T. I know we should try to live our lives as before we got T, but some changes have to be made and it seems that your T is made worse by drumming. At least we are alive ! Happy new year and love, Angela xx

Hi Crawford. It's easy to get stuck in a vicious circle with T. If you're worried and anxious about whether doing something will make your T worse then I think afterwards you are bound to listen for it to check and that in itself will make it seem worse. If I stop and listen to my T it always sounds loud to me - especially first thing in the morning. It would be easy to attribute that to something I did the day before, and If I convinced myself that was the case I would be depressed and stressed all day which would just aggravate things even more and make it impossible to get on top of it. I'm not saying that playing in the band can't aggravate your T but I do think it's just as likely that you are just perceiving it as worse. If you could keep yourself busy and active all the next day then perhaps it would help you to push it to the back of your mind. It would be a great shame if you couldn't enjoy your drumming for fear of making your T worse.

Hope things improve for you in 2017.

John

hi drumcraw. I have been gigging 35 years. Now got constant tinnitus, for the last 4 weeks, cant work, cant sleep, its there all the time. Trying to keep positive, louder at some times than others. Never missed a gig, will be missing my next one and have got a dep in. Music is my life, semi pro. Some people tell me to continue gigging, some say give it a rest for a few months. I played two gigs with T and ear plugs but felt really ill next day so going to give it a rest. Lots of famous musicians have it. Phil Collins stopped gigging in 2011, because of it and he is touring again so must be better or improved, it has given me some hope. Take care and hope you are feeling better soon.

hi musician12,i really feel for you having been there too iove tried evrything to quieten it only time and the fact you get used to it ive had for 4 years now but still not used to itm i do find concentrating on other things such as learning songs and involving your thoughts in some activity does through time lessen the impact but some days itsVERY LOUD, i wear hearing aids as i have mild to moderate hearing loss ,they have white noise on them it helps abit for staying fairly normal everyday but fot playing i wear ear plugs moulded to my ears with filters i can just hear the band and my drums but its terrible compared to how things were. all the ausiologists ive met and spoken to say dont stop playing as thats something you like but ill be honest i turn work down now due to T i dont want to play when its really loud and it takes the enjoyment away with the plugs, its hard to say if its getting better as it can go quiet then sudden,ly horrendously loud theres also these in ear monitors you can get so you can dictate the volume of the band you get a mix from the desk but not every band has that phil collims probably has some system for listeneing and the best of help with T my lifes turned upside down after just 1 gig!!!!!!! when i lay off playing it doesnt really make it quieter its still bad playing or not. my ear plugs and in ear monitors are made by A.C.S. and BOOTS are offering them. im amazed that so ,mnay surgical and medical things can be achieved but no cure for T ive been playing since i was 15 in bands so music abig part of my life too and also the social thing, i dont listen to other bands now either we just have to live in hope from day to day i liveon flight path to edinburgh airport so jets come really low over my house. sometimes my T is louder than the planes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hang in there though i know its tough and ive had some really dark days have to take pills to sleep too! but theres no alternative just try and focus on other things and one day youll get a surprise that the T has went quiet¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ sadly i cant manage that evry day maybe in afew years i will or theyll find acure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! take care crawford.

Hi Crawford. Thanks for your reply. I realise I am in the early stages, its nice that you can share your experiences here, that helps me to come to terms with what is happening. I am trying to keep busy, but sometimes I just need rest and peace, and it is really affecting my moods. One of the bands I play with have talked about getting ear monitors, that is something that would be beneficial, no doubt, but will just have to see if that happens. I don't feel well enough to play at the moment, wonder if I ever will. I have some musicians ear plugs and think i could get used to them with perseverance, but have made some enquiries about getting some custom made, still early days though i guess, but i will look into A.C.S and Boots. Thanks for sharing your experiences, I know I am not alone and really appreciate the support I am getting here. Take care.
