Hi,

Has anyone suffered tinnitus for a long time after covid or did it eventually go? If so, how long before it cleared up?

Thanks

you’ve probably read this already, Rabb, but Tinnitus UK says:

Tinnitus, along with many other health conditions, has been listed as a symptom of long Covid. The onset of tinnitus, or the worsening of existing tinnitus, may be as a result of the initial infection itself, changes to your physical wellbeing or stress.

A recent study showed that around 38% of people with long Covid experienced tinnitus, but that it was generally temporary and improved over time

Of the tinnitus sufferers who read this forum, some will have had Covid and some of those will have had long Covid, so this could be a very small sample here on Health Unlocked who might respond. Suppose you had as many as six responses and half of them said yes, and of those three one said ‘ a year’ , one said ‘a month’ and another said ‘three years’ you might be no further ahead.

I met someone last week who had Covid right at the beginning of the pandemic and she is still suffering badly (but not from T). Others recover well.

If I were you I’d be inclined to take the positive view and think “well it might improve!”.

Rosie is right on the money here - much of the research which has been carried out into post-COVID tinnitus is focussed on the Long COVID cohort, as that's chiefly where ongoing experiences are occurring.

People who develop COVID and make a recovery don't appear to be reporting unusually problematic ongoing tinnitus, at least not from the research that we're seeing - tinnitus may be one issue amidst chronic fatigue, respiratory distress and 'brain fog' and which one of those affects a person the most is arguably a very personal issue for those who are dealing with that medical challenge.

Thanks, I’ve recovered from covid well other than being fatigued but I’m sure that will sort itself and I think the fatigue is due to the tinnitus.

Im going with the positive approach that’s it’s not going to be ongoing. I have s tendency to worry making it worse!

Thanks, really appreciate your reply. I’ll definitely go with the positive view.

I had COVID in march 2022 and have had tinnitus since then. I had no tinnitus prior to having COVID. I have fatigue, likely because tinnitus had messed up my sleep somewhat, and recurring ear and throat infections since COVID - not something I'd struggled with beefier either. I have stopped hoping it will all just stop and started trying to accept the changes. I have some support from my GP. The infections haven't been as bad recently, no change in the tinnitus. I'm taking it day to day now.

Has there ever been an anonymous study into this? It is interesting as regardless of the day to day stresses that cause my Tinnitus to fluctuate I definitely did not have tinnitus before my second 'dose' of COVID and mine went really bad after I caught it a third time at which point my hearing loss also deteriorated a lot. I always had bouts of tinnitus - high stress or after a cold, but they'd last a week or two. Not like now and tbh it's not now going away for me, however I'm focussing on being positive and trying to take each day as it comes, and yes I am feeling a lot more positive this year than I was this time last year.

The problem is that to a certain extent it's very subjective. I've had covid twice and reckon my T got worse and has never really relented much since then. I'm not suffering from long covid though.

MY ENT says he got T from a Covid vaccine! He cured himself of it (and is now anti-vax).

My tinnitus worsened after the covid vaccine. Having it is one of the biggest regrets of my life.

Any tips how the ENT doc cured himself? I got tinnitus 4 days post Moderna and it still ongoing.
