Hi there, gabapentin is good for nerve pain. I've been using it for 7 years now.

Thanks ---have you suffered any side effects??

Hi, gabapentin is quite sedating. I can drive fine on a 100mcg dose but not 300mcg. I get both 100mcg capsules and 300mcg. I have severe pain at times and get relief after about 2 hours. It's quite long lasting. If you take high doses you can experience nausea. When i first took it i got so hungry, it made me want to munch carbohydrates!!

Thank you for your reply--- may I ask if you suffer from hypothyroidism too? Maybe you can tell me if Gabapentin interacts with other meds ---no worries if you cannot . I will find out soon enough as I have neurology appointment soon.

Yes i'm hypo and take meds for a bladder disease too, one of those meds is cimetidine which seems to interact with several meds! I trialed gabapentin whilst in hospital having my bladder stretched. Gabapentin has proved successful with this very painful bladder disease for a lot of patients. I have awful nerve pain in my feet and gabapentin is very helpful for this too. I've used a lot of pain meds over the years and favour this one. It's good at times to be a bit sedated when you're in severe pain.

Hi , For many years a tiny dose of Amytriplene has been used for this and other nerve pain. There are stronger drugs such as Gabapentin, with even more side effects. Other wise, for temporary relief my endo says to spray with GTN, never worked for me. I find the best thing, for a topically application s chilli ointment, only on a script. it does work but follow the instructions, implicitly as other wise, water ,too painful to bear. Always apply with cotten wool ( it doe not say that ) or the hands are so painful when using them.

The other thing, you do not say what it is for.? It is more commonly caused by Diabetes,2 autoimmune and hormonal. It has very similar symptoms initially to thyroid disease ( if yours is autoimmune too). Make sure by having 2 blood tests, Glucose and the better Hb 1 AC

I hope that helps, I really suffer with it and often it wakes me up ,so I do sympathise.

Best wishes,

Jackie

Thanks Jackie for the information---have Drs appointment on Tuesday so will see what she suggests---if anything ---she will probably tell me I have to wait to see the neurologist. I will definitely ask for something for pain relief---I tried amitriptylene some time ago but it made me nauseous and dizzy so thats out of the question.

I sympathise with you too Jackie as I wake up at night too and nobody knows what its like do they----only those who have to live with it.

Take care -

Hi I hope something helps. I find one of the worse things of my severe diabetes. If you have not had a test please be sure to, however, sounds as if you would have done that.If you find any thing better ,do let me know, PM( click on my name ) as I hate it too.I had the same problem with Amytriptelene and the similar old anti depressents always used for this. I tried lots of times!

I have Ideopathic sensory peripheral neuropathy and had tried various drugs such as gabapentin and amitryptyline . But at the pain clinic I was advised tu use 60mg of cymbalta (duloxitine) which is an antidepressant. I have found this really good and has reduced the pain of neuropathy better than any of the other drugs I have taken so many of these drugs make you crave carbohydrates. Cymbalta does not seem to do this.

Thanks for the info. Have taken note .

That's so interesting about the carb craving! when I first took gabapentin I was absolutely ravenous, I did consume a lot of toast! It did wear off thank goodness. I'm taking a lot at the moment and the odd dose of oxycodone, the side effects really do stop eventually.

How do you find the oxycodone for the neuropathic pain? Have you developed neuropathy because of thyroid or some other reason? My neurologist says mine is Ideopathic but I am wondering if its caused by hypothyroidism.
