Newly diagnosed...advice please.

Hi. I was diagnosed with hypothyroid about 3wks ago. I was put on an initial dose of 25g of Levothyroxine and then had it increased to 50g and now 75g. My initial test result was said to be 1.3 and one taken a week later was 4.7.(?) I think these numbers refer to my T4 levels. I also had a thyroid antibody test which was ok but my initial tests indicated Liver had been slightly affected. I haven't had a proper consultation with my GP as he rushed me out the door after initial diagnosis to get medication before pharmacy shut and since then has only spoken to me on the phone for 2mins as had no free app. I am seeing him next fri but want to know what questions I should ask. When I had asked him what my T3 levels were he said 'we don't usually worry about those'. However, when reading comments on here, you guys often refer to both T3 & T4 plus other results. I'm trying to educate myself on thyroid probs but find it all quite confusing especially the results/figures and what they all mean. I have put on loads of weight very quickly, feel extremley tired, have a horrid blocked feeling in my throat, achy and low/tearful in myself. I just want to see my Gp and and ask the right questions as I feel he`ll just fob me off saying 'just take the meds and you`ll be fine'. I would be grateful for any basic advice from real sufferers and from real experience. Many thanks.

Hi CTin

You really need to ask for a print out of your blood test results, so you can monitor it and be part of your own care.

You can ask for vitamin and mineral tests too, such as iron/ferritin folate B12 and vitamin D. (as these are all in the mix to feel better). and definitely ask for an examination or scan of your neck, perhaps a referral.

I'm glad to see your GP has put you on a reasonable dose in a short time, and not left you at 25 - I think sometimes it takes a while to 'kick in'? Meanwhile have a look at the main TUK site

Thank you Jane for your reply. Will definitely see if he'll send me for those extra tests. Had a quick look at your link, it looks very comprehensive so will go off and read that now. So much info out there but all quite confusing and changeable and contradicting, so it's good to have a recommended website to look at.

Thanks again.

Hi. You also need your neck checked if you have a blocked feeling in your throat. You may have an enlarged thyroid or goitre. Good luck with the appointment.
