I had a thyroidectomy 2 years ago. I had headache post op which apparently some people can get but do not recall any real pain from the thyroidectomy site just a bit of discomfort. The drain was taken out on day 2(not everybody has one) and the clips on day 4. The scar is now barely visible. I was advised to massage my face cream into it daily once it had healed so don't know if this helped. Good luck.
I had my thyroidectomy 15 years ago when I was in early twenties. Like debsj I had a drain that was removed within 2 days my clips remained in for 7 days. There was initial discomfort but this soon passes. I remember have a sore throat but I was given simple linctus to help ease the soreness. I have been on levothyroxine since and my dosage has rarely changed over the last 15 years even when I was pregnant it was increased slightly. People who don't know that I have had the operation don't notice my scar, I rubbed it with Bio-oil. Unfortunately I am one of those cases who is now waiting to have surgery again as my goiter has returned but this time only on the rhs. Good luck.
thanks for your reply, are you glad you had the procedure done ? i already have two children but think i would like 1 more baby in future so its good to hear your pregnancy wasnt complicated by having a thyroidectomy.. did you put on alot of weight post op ? ive heard alot of people do which is a bit of a worry. x
I am glad that I had the op my goiter was really large and I was struggling daily with it so really had no option other than RAI (radioactive iodine) which I decided against due to my age. I no problems during my pregnancy they monitored my thyroid levels throughout the pregnancy and instead of my son having the heel prick test when he was born they did a full blood test and he was fine. I did put weight on post op but before my first op my thyroid was so overactive they couldn't get it under control so I had lost a 2 stone in the time waiting for my op. Although I put weight on it wasn't excessive and it did balance out once I went back to normal eating and my thyroxine levels were correct. Let see what happens after this op cause I'm putting the weight on this time rather than losing it!
i havent lost weight really so dont want to put a load on if i have the surgery. its a bit vain to worry about your weight but when ive read people have put a stone or two on it is a worry. hope your second surgery goes well for you. god damm thyroid !!! so annoying. x
Feel free to message me any questions. I'm day ten post op now. I'm glad I had it done.
hi, thanks for messeaging me,.where abouts in the uk are you if you dont mind me asking. whats your situation to why you had a thyroidectomy ? how do you feel etc.
Hi, I had my thyroid removed at the end of 2011, over 2 operations, due to cancer. The first op I had stitches and my wound was really noticable, the completion op a month later I had a drain and staples that were removed the day after before I went home. I have put onb 5 kg since my op but have started to lose it again now. I think it was more due to my meds being changed for 2 separate RAI treatment afterwards and now my meds have been settled for a while it is slowly shifting. I lost my voice for about a month after my completion surgery, but apart from that I had no real problems. I would also recommend that you have your vit D and calcuim levels tested regularly as there seems to be a link between the levels being low and being on levothyroxine.
Feel free to message me if you need any more info. Good luck.

hi charlotte thanks for replying,i have to say it all sounds pretty grim with one thing and another,i understand due to cancer you didnt have alot of choice and will just be glad to be cancer free.my situation is down to a overactive thyroid that hasnt gone away after being on medication for a year, cant have radioiodine as have children. so i to havent got alot of options really.its not something i really want done though, with everything to consider, there can be alot of issues with weight, voice, scar and levels being right afterwards, did you have the op on the nhs ? was it painfull at all ? what is your age ? this may affect how quick recovery is maybe ? im 32 . thanks.
It is a decision I wouldn't want to have to make, I had no choice and as you say am just glad to have got rid of the cancer. I had both my ops on the NHS, I was surprised how little pain I got from it. They inject morphine into the site before you wake up and I was prescribed paracetamol and ibrofen for a few days afterwards. I suffered more pain from a candular they had put into a vein in my wrist during my first op! I was 33 when I had my ops, so of simnilar age.
what do you mean when you say its not a desicion you wouldnt want to have to make ? the more i hear about the surgery the more i dont want to have to have it done but i havent really got that many options as to what i can do either.
I am now 7 weeks post a total thyroid removal. I was never given a choice - it was not cancer but the thyroid was so toxic and swollen that no other treatment was even suggested. I felt that this was the right decision as it did feel like I had a powerful parasite in my neck that was slowly killing me. The symptoms were so bad.
The surgery has left no real mark (no external stitches) but I still have some discomfort with my neck and throat, but the swelling has not gone down completely.
Don't let anyone tell you 'it is only a little op' as you need to be prepared for possible significant discomfort and also getting your head around what has happened. However, I still think that this was the right thing to do. Now it is not a case of 'what is the thyroid going to do next?' but a case of 'will we ever get the medication just right?'. If I still had the thyroid then both questions could be raising their heads.
I still have bad symptoms as the medication is probably still to low but I am hoping that over time that will resolve. However bad I may feel now from time to time it is nothing compared to the dreadful state I was in before the op.
I hope you are able to find your way through all of this.
HI i had right side of my thyroid removed in September i had overactive thyroid for 14 years and was on carbimazole luckily i always felt ok they wanted me to have RAI but really didnt like the idea of that so stayed on the tablets until they found lump in my neck which was earlier this year. so decided to have the op ,it wasnt that bad scar doesnt show too much didnt have any bad effects so far, not on tablets at the moment and just waiting for levels to settle TSH is supressed a bit but got to go back to hospital in February wish you all the best with whatever you have to have done Sandra
