.....there is a great deal on this forum about iodine and kelp. It may just be worth taking a look at See More Tags on the Right side of this page - Click and then go from there. You will be amazed how much information is stored there for when you have the time and energy to read. Lots of differing views too.........

There are indeed many different views.

Mine starts out by saying that the Thyroid Manager site says this:

The risks of excess iodine intake

As discussed so far in this chapter, iodine deficiency impairs thyroid function. Similarly, iodine excess, including overcorrection of a previous state of iodine deficiency, can also impair thyroid function. The effect of iodine on the thyroid gland is complex with a “U shaped” relation between iodine intake and risk of thyroid diseases. Both low and high iodine intake are associated with an increased risk of thyroid disorders. Healthy adults can tolerate up to 600-1100 µg iodine/day without any side effects ( Table 11 ). However, this upper limit is much lower in a population which has been exposed to iodine deficiency for a prolonged period in the past. The optimal level of iodine intake to prevent any thyroid disease may be a relatively narrow range around the recommended daily intake of 150 µg.

So before considering supplementation it is desirable to have some idea if you have suffered from iodine deficiency. You also need some estimation of your current intake. Ideally you would have a urinary iodine test - but these are very rarely done.

At about 51 I started to feel tired so I started Q10 and also selenium, zinc and kelp for my hair. That was about 20 years ago and I took them all most of the time but I stopped the Kelp about a couple of years ago when I found out I had Hashis. I stopped the Kelp because I wasn't sure if it was the right thing to take or not especially as I read that most kelp that is harvested comes from polluted waters. However, I have never been really ill with my hypothyroidism and wonder if all that Kelp and Selenium etc. actually did a lot to keep the Hashis at bay.....Val
