Hi there

Can anyone tell me if my hypothyroidism and my IGA deficiency is related ? I have stopped taking my thyroxine ( 225mcg per day ) and i have NEVER felt better. I am getting my bloods done next week and i was wondering exactly WHAT they should be testing for. For some reason, they just don't care these doctors nowadays :(

HI

IgA is one of the immunoglobulins namely immunoglobulin type A or an antibody that helps fight off viruses etc, the others are IgG IgM. IgA is checked to determine if you may have celiac disease as many celiacs are deficient in this. Unsure of the connection between this and hypothyroidism, but if you suffer from one autoimmune condition you are most likely to develop another, though saying that celiac I believe is present from birth as it in an inability to absorb wheat products I think these can not be metabolised but the body as you are lacking a certain enzyme.

I hope this helps if I have posted twice i am sorry as this is the first post I have made and i may make a mistake

Hi I also have selective igA Deficiency (and so does my son), don't know if I have coeliacs yet as they keep trying to do the igA test for it (!), but I do have lots of anti-TPO antibodies, a nodule in my thyroid and have been suffering with all the symptoms of hypothyroidism for many many years but the usual story of they won't treat me due to fluctuating TSH tests (grr).

From my understanding anyone with a PID is at risk of developing any number of autoimmune diseases, unfortunately!

Can I ask you, what, if any, treatment do you have for your igA Deficiency?

Karen :)

I just found out today that I have hypothyroidism. I also am IgA deficient so am wondering if they are related. I know that having an autoimmune disorder can make it more likely to get other autoimmune disorders as we age. However from what I've been told, they don't have any treatment for IgA Defiency. People who are IgG Deficient can get treatment though.
