Hi I have heard an Iodine supplement is helpful, has anyone tried it. I am taking Levothroxine and not sure if I should take both?

Iodine supplementation can be a very complex issue for both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid patients.

The renowned expert on iodine is Dr. Guy Abraham. Some of his research is here:

It is possible to have a 24 hour iodine test which you may want to consider.

Iodine is essential for the thyroid, but is also useful for breast and lung health plus lots more as you will see from the above research.

p.s There is also a book by Dr. David Brownstein "Iodine, why you need it, why you can't live without it" which is a very good read. Jane x

Please, do not take iodine unless you have been tested and know you need it - I speak from experience - because excess iodine can be as dangerous as too little.

Besides, if you are taking levo, you are taking iodine because when T4 is converted into T3 (etc) iodine is released and recycled in the body. On top of that, if you are taking levo, you don't need as much iodine because your thyroid doesn't have to - probably can't - produce as much hormone.

I would also say that whatever the bodies need for iodine outside the need of the thyroid to produce thyroid hormone, it is getting iodine through the convertion of said thyroid hormone in every cell in the body, because every cell in the body needs thyroid hormone. Hope that's not confusing. lol

Thanks very much for the advice. Having got my thyroid problems under control at the moment I don't think I will upset them by taking Iodine. Best wishes Kim

It might not be beneficial if you are taking thyroxine for thyroid suppression.
