under-active thyroid and migraine

Just a thought,is there a connection between thyroid problems and migraine. I ask because today I started having an aura migraine lucky I managed to relax and rid myself of the chance of it turning into a full blown migraine. BUT I noticed that I had the same sort of sore throat that I get when my thyroid is at its worse.

I believe there can be a connection.

After more than 30 migraine-free years since my first migraine, I had two aura-only migraines earlier this year - which I think are likely to have been connected to my thyroid levels.

Now that is odd, having just replied to your reply to someone else, another interesting post! I had my first classic migraine at 3 years old - 3 days of vomiting and feeling so much pain. I then got them regularly (every month)from about 11yrs old until I started my periods at 13. Then they came back when I was older, in my twenties, but after acupuncture I eventually stopped getting them. They have now returned as 'silent migraines' - the name (I believe) for the aura only migraines.

I meant to see the doctor, as although they are pretty and short lasting (only an hour or two) I had not heard of anyone else having them (other than when I googled them - and then hardly anyone), and they did worry me. I did not go to the doctor because I go so often with all the hashi's symptoms that have now gone since I have started self medicating.

I decided to try T3 only in the last couple of weeks, and I was describing how I feel to my mother, who also used to suffer with migraines. The interesting thing is that I said that I feel a clarity, rather like the sharpness of definition (not necessarily visual) that you get after a migraine!

Anecdotal only, but yes, I am sure there is a connection as I had five months of virtually non-stop awful migraines when very hypothyroid before diagnosis, lost all excess tonnage. They eventually tapered off with efficient treatment (T4/T3), TSH suppressed.

If I know one might be looming I use the old Chinese(?) trick of drinking a pint of really hot water. Does it work? Don't know really, but have not been bedridden in a dark room vomiting, dizzy, for 3/4 days since treatment got up to speed.

I have had constant sore throats/ migraine, and believe there is a connection with being under medicated. Since adding an extra 1/4 tablet to my dosage the headaches have become less.

Thanks for the replies to the migraine question. I wont feel such a fool when I tell my GP about it. And thanks for the Hot water trick,that will be very useful next time.

An A&E doctor told me that dehydration can set off a migraine, and in fact my last two or three followed periods of illness when I might well have been dehydrated. I wonder if this is why the water helps.

Good point. and warm water is more in-keeping with body temperature.

Since switching to ndt i've not had a migraine. On t4, i'd get them for 2 days solid. It was hell.

Thanks to Piggysue's reply I have come back to this post. When I read it just now I was thinking I don't remember writing this,thinking it was recent. Simple because I have had another aura migraine recently. Here again I managed to stop it by lying down in the dark,but this was not quite enough this time and I had to resort to medication. Still got the sore throat which meant I couldn't tolerate hot drinks

The point I wanted to make was,this was new years eve and over Christmas I had upped my thyroid meds. to help me cope. (from 50 mcg. T3 to 60 mcg. ) So does this mean that I am still undermedicated?? Although I'm more active I still weigh the same and by the end of the week I am very tired.
