what we need is a slimming club for people with thyroid conditions because things like sprouts are not good for us and we need to learn what is good for us and what is bad we need an dietician who understand the thyroid diet

weight gain with under active thyroid
I love sprouts!! I have not got a clue how to loose weight!! Never been over weight in my life... And put on 4st in about 10 weeks. I've only just been diagnosed 4 days ago and started medication 3 days ago, I just want sleep, cry, scream... But most of all be me again wich means finding out how to diet and what to eat. I need a slimming club as well x
What a great idea and I am happy to help I have diverticulitis as well since 2/2012 so I have been finding out the hard way what works and what does not.

What we need first of all is sufficient thyroid meds to raise metabolism. Low metabolism causes weight gain. I have not got a link at present as I am using another's computer.
Dr Lowe and others have said we do not get adequate meds with T3 added if on Levo and a research article confirms this.
i know, having read lots and took notice of lots of things on this site that my doctors isnt very knowledgeable etc about thyroid meds/etc, and will just give out the levo, i know a lot more could be done, but they wont do it, ive tried, begged etc, but now there must be a diet that may help, i take the vitamins etc to help, i cant afford any private meds/etc, we live on pension credit, it would be a brilliant idea if there was a diet for thyroid patients, and why are sprouts bad for us?
Why shouldn't we eat sprouts?
sprouts cabbage broccoli and cauliflower contains chemicals called goitrogens that interferes with hormone synthesis if you eat them cook them well cooking them well will get rid of the chemicals but dont eat to many to be on the safe side
Would the cabbage/sprouts advice apply to me? I have no thyroid, depending solely (for the time being) on Levo. I serve the leafy vegetables regularly because my husband is on very strong meds for Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthropathy, so he needs all the folate he can get.
That would be a great idea to have a diet for thyroid sufferers, I have been on thyroid medication for 18 years and I have always struggled with my weight (being hypothyroid) and I'm fed up with it.
Please is there anyone out there who can help?
I hate sprouts, am so glad they are excluded from thyroid diet!! As long as the aforementioned greens are cooked there shouldn't be a problem but NEVER eat coleslaw or anything else with raw broccoli, sprouts etc in it and eat the minimum of cooked ones too.
Didn't know about the coleslaw-gutted!! I just have a bit of the greens but can't have much of veg and fruit because it plays havoc with IBS lol! Now I've just been reading up about the wheat/gluten thing..... Perhaps the atkins diet does have something to recommend it after all lol!
I do take a multi vitamin/mineral ( for over 50's) supplement every day and can say hand on heart that, if I forget, by dinnertime I can tell because it makes a big difference to my energy levels and ability to stay awake. I'm UAT. So I guess I'm lacking in some things but, as it has so many things in it I'm not likely to be able to narrow it down. Cx
Hi I have been on the Atkins diet for about 2 months and have lost a stone. I really couldn't believe it when the inches came off. went down a dress size. I was also busy finding out what to eat and how to cook it with more flavourings that I wasn't thinking about the foods that I had to forego. I didn't even miss my maltesers. lol

Why I are Brussel sprouts not good for us, surely they do not put your weight on, eaten in moderation. Siggi.
Sprouts are nothing to do with weight! They can interfere with thyroid function:

Please bear in mind that everyone is different, however.

My pituitary gland doesnt work so obviously neither does my thyroid, I have always struggled with my weight and my energy levels are very low, i am always tired, well more than tired more exhausted. Any help would be great, I do like sprouts, cauli etc but dont eat them very often so dont think they make any difference to my health .
why not try a little more exercise increasing a little each day it sounds mad when you are so tired but this will help
I'm hypothyroid and lost over 4 stone over the last two years. The first year I wasn't diagnoised and found I was feeling worse health wise rather than better eventhough I'd lost nearly two stone, and my weight loss had become very slow even though I was eating healthier and doing around one to two hours of excercise each day.
After about 9 month of taking 50mcg of Levothyroixine and not feeling any better the doctor increased the dose to 75mcg and I noticed that I was feeling more alive, but was still struggling to lose weight as I felt I'd lost motivation through 20 months of working really hard at it and not getting anywhere.
That's when I joined Slimming World; since then I've lost 1 1/2 stone and I cann't rate them enough. With Slimming World you are encouraged to eat health food in a health way with not much weighing and measuring. I didn't need to make very many changes as I was already eating healthy but they did give me back my motivation back.
Slimming World don't know I have a problem with my thyroid, I didn't want to focus on this but on staying possitive about my weight loss. It won't work for everyone but it's worked for me, along side the right medication.
Hope this helps. Elaine x
