Thyroiditis & mastitis - not related to childbirth

Hi, I have a hyperactive thyroid for which I am on Carbimazole 20mg daily. I have developed mastitis within the last week. I am not pregnant or breast feeding (my only child is 14 so I am many years past this). I see there are links between thyroiditis and mastitis. According to my consultant I do not have elevated antibodies indicating an autoimmune disease but autoimmune disease can be indicated in thyroiditis and mastitis presentations.

Has anyone had similar symptoms with a non defined source of thyroiditis?

Thanks

I have hyperthyroidism and it seems to be linked to female hormone changes in my body. For example, I got thyroiditis after the birth of each of my children and then was stable for years and all of a sudden I recently had a flare up. My suspicion is that perimenopause triggered my thyroid to go a bit haywire again. I am 45. Do you think your issues could be related to perimenopause, as I see you are 44? I know perimenopause can cause breast changes etc. All the best, and I hope you feel better soon!

Hi, thanks for your reply. I didn’t have any issues with my thyroid during or post pregnancy but it is a possibility as I am nearing the age for peri-menopause. 🤷‍♀️

Do you have the same symptoms of thyroiditis and mastitis?

I don’t have the antibodies associated with either Graves or Hashimoto’s although both thyroiditis and mastitis are indicated in an autoimmune thyroid condition. There is a small percentage where these symptoms are related to something more nefarious like lymphoma. I have had scans of my thyroid and there are no masses but not had a scan of anywhere else so small risk thyroiditis could be a secondary presentation. The risk is very small though so going on Occam’s razor less likely to be the cause.

A thyroid storm is scary. I’ve not had one that I’m aware of but my resting heart rate was regularly greater than 140 lying down in bed doing absolutely nothing until I started Carbimazole which was awful. Who knew an overactive thyroid could be so exhausting!
