Normal T4 level?

Delphine-18 profile image

I recently had.my annual thyroid function test. My test showed my T4 - 12.6

TSH 1.5

When I was given the results i was told they were normal!

On Levothyroxine my T4 should be more than 12..6

Lab reference for normal us 12-22

FBP showed marginally high red blood cell count 5.2

I am un agony with joint pain. Can't loose any weight. Feel rotten.

Got on to GP so back for list of other bloods and repeat TFT tomorrow.

I am on 75mgs of Levo for past 5 years.

I have a history of Atrial Fibrillation so GP reluctant to raise dose.

I will pist my results when available.

Thanks in advance for support.

It may be worth reading through your post and replies of 7 years ago. Lots of good advice relevant to your post today. NHS testing will not cover FT3 as you know ...

My heartbeat changes when my B12 j@b is due. How is your B12 - Folate - Ferritin - VitD ?

Delphine-18 very to sorry to about your problems, typical though of being dosed according to your TSH level. TSH is not a thyroid hormone it is a messenger sent to your thyroid from the pituitary to tell it to produce more thyroid hormone.

Too many GPs diagnose and treat by TSH only and tell you that you are over treated because your TSH is below the reference range.(so very wrong) Can you afford to get your own pin prick blood test done via Medichecks or Monitor my health, as used by me and many others on here. I bet your T3 is very low and your symptoms won't improve until you get more thyroid hormone into your system.

For hormone replacement to work properly you also need good levels of B12, Vit D Folate, Ferritin. Medichecks do these tests along with thyroid tests. Watch out for discounts on Thursdays or use the 10% discount code for TUK members.

I used to get palpitations, not badly, when undertreated. I now take T4 and some T3 and no longer have palpitations.

It really is time that trainee medics were given proper information about Thyroid treatment and the worship of TSH results was firmly consigned to the bin. Hope things improve with more T4 and good vitamin levels. Keep coming back to ask questions. That's how I learned what I know now and greatly improved my thyroid health.

See GP

Write a list of your symptoms to show them

Request “trial” increase in Levo to 87.5mcg daily

Which brand of levothyroxine are you taking

Request testing of vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin too

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Retest full thyroid 8 weeks after getting increase in dose

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Post all about what time of day to test

Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning.

Tips on how to do DIY finger prick test

support.medichecks.com/hc/e...

If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test

If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal

Thank you for replying. I will post all.my results as soon as back from lab.

I am wondering if I should try taking the levothyroxine at nighttime. This was suggested ti ne by a Endocrinologist I seen some years ago. My GP advised me not to and just take 2hrs prior to breakfast.

My Vit D level is 67

T3 - 4.2

I take a pharmanord multivitamin.

I will assess this when these blood tests come back.

I take Magnesium 300mg at bedtime so I understand if I change levothyroxine to bedtime will have ti change Magnesium to am.

I don't understand how GPs have such limited knowledge of the thyroid gland when it must be one of the most common thing they come across in Primary Practice

Thanks again.

Astonishing isn’t it

Magnesium best taken afternoon or evening

So if you move Levo to bedtime take magnesium at least 4 hours before that ideally

I take a pharmanord multivitamin.

Multivitamins never recommended on here

A) you shouldn’t supplement iron unless you need it

B) iodine not recommended when already taking iodine in levothyroxine

Test folate, ferritin, B12 and vitamin D and only supplement what’s needed

My Vit D level is 67

That’s likely too low. How much vitamin D are you taking

Aim to maintain at least over 80nmol

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/218...

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly when supplementing

Can test via NHS private testing service

There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7.

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with thyroid issues we frequently need higher dose than average
