If so how do you know which is causing it?

Can palpitations be because by both hypo and hyper thyroiditis?

medics tend to think palpitations equals hyper
Patients experience says hypo often causes palpitations or ectopic beats

KatyMac68,
I posted recently as below.
Whilst I am well aware that atrial fibrillation does not always lie behind palpitations, and some who have afib do not get palpitations, there is sufficient connection to make it worth at least a quick look.
One of the most common reasons individuals seek advice from their physician is the sensation of awareness of their own heartbeat or palpitations.

Prevalence of abnormal thyroid hormone levels in acute new-onset atrial fibrillation

I’ve experienced palpitations (plus tremor, fast pulse, heightened anxiety) when FT4 and FT3 have been too high in the range (for me), or too low. Symptoms also occur if I adjust my dosage too quickly. I now only adjust medication (upwards or downwards) super slowly, eg adding 12.5mcg Levothyroxine per day (even alternate days at first).
if you reduce dose and they go away , you have your answer.

Good morning, KatyMac68. If it is of any help, for many years I was ‘treated’ with T4 replacement only. I knew it wasn’t good enough but no amount of persuasion convinced any doctor I needed the add-on of T3. Years passed, during which I had ectopics and an erratic pulse. Eventually, when I was practically on my knees and with desperately thin hair and carrying a few extra pounds, I got a new endocrinologist who took one look at me and reached for the prescription pad. Since being on T3 all heart irregularities have ceased. Life is much calmer and I now have hair growth again and normal weight. It is astounding to me how so many in the medical profession look at a test result and announce ‘you are fine’ when you yourself know you are most definitely not, and you would not be wasting your and their time if you were. You’d think we were asking for recreational drugs. . .
