Hi, calling doc tomorrow to ask for a beta blocker, it’s just I was put on proprananol a while back and I read on here it’s not good for conversion.
It is just for a fast heart rate. Thanks all

Propranolol is often chosen precisely because of its effect on conversion. If you are hyperthyroid, then it can have a small effect in lowering your conversion, hence a slightly lower T3 level.
Other than that, I have no idea why someone would choose one rather than another. I was offered bisoprolol but declined to take it. Hopefully someone else does have a clue?
Wondering if you saw my post the other day?
Prevalence of abnormal thyroid hormone levels in acute new-onset atrial fibrillation

Thanks for that Helvella, no I hadn’t read that - very interesting! So am I right this heart stuff can indeed be low thyroid hormones?
I think iv had an underlying hypo going on since a child, I would have slept n slept , I was always cold, mood swingy etc etc. my pulse was always in the higher range - found this out in my teenage years and after birth of son had awful bout of tachy plus missed heart beats. Iv had heart tests, I do have a mild murmur - hereditary but no treatment needed. Iv recently had a heart trace too all ok.
I am assuming it’s my low thyroid hormones causing the heart to race. I have just started on Armour almost 3 weeks ago and feeling bit better already but iv a way to go I know AND so relieved I can tolerate🙏🏻🙏🏻
There’s a big connection in covid interfering with thyroid and hpa system, with each covid I have been so v ill indeed, this is when it went spiralling for me and like others here it’s a long difficult and somewhat traumatic road!
Best wishes
Sorry - failed to reply earlier.
Also remember that if propranolol does affect conversion then to some extent you can compensate by increasing doses of thyroid hormone medicines. It is far from perfect, but a small increment in dose might be enough to overcome the reduction in conversion.
The critical factors are first knowing it happens, then remembering that if you stop the propranolol, the reverse will happen!
Thank you Helvella,
‘apparently’ most hypo people have slow heart rate but I have a higher heart rate which is mostly associated with hyper? Any thoughts on this? Or is it simply under optimal T hormones?
Appreciated
Well, I'm convinced my heart rate has been higher when I have been under-dosed on levothyroxine.
Some time ago, my watch kept alerting me to high heart rate. I increased my dose (112.5 to 125), since when my heart rate lowered and I virtually never get an alert.
But that might, or might not, apply to you!
I take bisoprolol for tachycardia. From what I understand is that the effect on conversion is minimal and seems to be more linked to higher doses. My conversion was already not quite what I hope for and I haven't seen a decline in my levels in the 7ish months I've been on it.
The other option I have to switch to is ivabradine but I didn't like things I read about that one more. I should add ivabradine isn't a beta blocker but accomplishes the same thing.
I was T3 only and low dose of Bisoprolol left me feeling awful and had to stop (so not only T4 to T3 conversion changes).
No, I developed persistent high heart rate Afib after partner died. Doctors wanted me to take bisoprolol and blood thinner before having cardioversion. Stuck with it for a month before and few weeks after but could not wait to stop as made me feel so ill.
I am trying to work out if I can prevent Afib recurrence by treating hormones (bringing down high free cortísol mainly) levels and then seeing what that means for T3 and HRT levels. So far have been able to reduce T3 dose by reducing cortisol.
Currently still getting Afib occasionally and still in process of hormone adjustment, so jury is out as to whether I will need the ablation anyway.
Thanks, yes DHEA seems to have done the trick for the cortisol, just got to sort out the other hormones again now.
