In today's Guardian, interesting piece on the latest research on the massive overlap between physical and mental health.

Holistic treatment eh... I do somehow feel that people being unable to access GP's even just to spend 5 to 10 minutes being reassured the issue isn't a big deal allows it to fester and become a much bigger deal on many levels
The article also mentions FND, which is still regarded by many medics as hysteria or somatoform disorder. Its a crock as to my mind there is a clear issue with the nervous system malfunctioning, but patients are being fobbed off with " all in your head" baloney again.
And with FND increasingly being diagnosed with FND in neurology clinics, and despite it being on a par with MS and Parkinsons for how disabling it is, these patients are left to rot basically, instead of getting the help they need.
My immediate thought (apart from a very positive group of thoughts) are Petros Perros eat your f..king heart out you jerk.
Sparkling I think it is you who keeps an eye on the Guardian health stuff. Thank you. This is brilliant research/news. I felt better just reading it!
I should not be using words like the one above. I am an elderly lady - not so much of the lady I suppose.
Swear away my dear, my language is worse now than when I was teenager. I care about stuff more now and using profanities is a good stress reliever. Scientifically proven 😆
Interesting article - thank you, Sparklingsunshine. Also interesting that they don't mention that FND is in DSM or that 'hysteria' is one of the key words in the latest hypothesis about FND. Plus we know from conditions like MdDS that structural damage isn't necessary to get symptoms so it seems odd that they are saying that no structural damage is found in people thought to have FND. I wish I could find this article via the Guardian so I could read the comments and add to them. I'll have another search when I get a minute (hahahaha)
I also think they are being a tad economical with the truth about what 'functional' means, in the context of FND, since we also know the term 'functional' is used because infers one thing to patients and another to our doctors (which makes the 'patients as partners' era of medicine impossible). We also know that it is used to aid diagnostic acceptance (of FND) because it doesn't overtly point to a mental health disorder diagnosis which is medical gaslighting 101 because we know FND is in DSM.
I see Wessely got mentioned, but not his 'the function of 'functional' mixed methods review' (Kanaan was the lead author, I think) which also suggests that 'functional' means 'hysteria'. There's also no mention of the 'territorial expansion' commentary from Kanaan which accompanied the FND Subtypes paper which has been giving me cause for concern ever since I read it.
While I'm here, did you consult with Prof Rea? If so, I hope it was helpful
I have, he is currently conducting exhaustive tests, hasnt dismissed me as having VM or PPPD. I've had inner ear MRI, a load of static tests using googles to track eye movements, an advanced hearing test and have a dynamic posturography test on Thursday.
I see him for all the results in February. He hasnt discounted VM but the symptoms in my right ear, hyperacusis and autophany, are of concern and need further exploration. I just hope they can find something.
That's good to know (especially re PPPD) and I hope the tests help him to help you with figuring out what's going on and that he can give you a) a clear diagnosis and prognosis and b) a treatment plan.
Interesting to know that the people who do the coding are thinking about taking the 'postural' part of PPPD out of the equation but I don't think we have a timeline for when this will or won't happen. Hmm.
