is overeating a thyroid thing. struggling at the moment

I am over weight and keep over eating. Cant leave the bread and butter alone. I fast from dawn till dusk twice a week and that used to help me eat normally the rest of the time. Now I am all over the place with it. I have just reduced my t3 slightly and due to reduce again in a few weeks. I eat well, organic fruit and veg. meat and lots of fish, no sugar. Too many carbs at the moment in snacks.

I have previously tried going gluten free but it made me miserable and no better.

Perhaps you're low in certain nutrients and the body is trying to compensate for that. Have you had your vit D, vit B12, folate and ferritin tested?

Thank you. Thats a good thought. my ferretin was a bit low so on some iron. I made some chicken liver pate the other week and couldnt leave it alone. my folate could be higher perhaps. vit D more than good and I inject B12 weekly.

Well, the fact that you couldn't leave it alone tells you something, doesn't it. :)

If you're injecting B12 you should also be taking a daily B complex, because all the Bs work together and need to be kept balanced. A good methylated B complex would raise your folate.

Are you taking magnesium and vit K2-MK7 with your vit D - if you're taking vit D, that is? Even if you're not, your magnesium could be low - it is in most people.

Yes I take magnesium, k2 with my vit d and a b vit complex. forgotten the brand but recommended by one of the admins here.

Good. :) So, keep on keeping on with the liver paté.

That matches my experience. Whenever my iron/ferritin are low I start to eat as if I'm starved. The only thing that helps keep it under control for me is to eat more protein.

I only found out the connection between my overeating and my protein intake around a couple of years after I started treating my hypothyroidism. But my eating habits were well established by then and I've found it hard to change.

Thanks. I will up the protein. My ferritin is a bit low so doctor prescribed some iron.

Can I ask why you are reducing your T3 and intend to reduce it again? If you have been taking T3 for a while, then you must have had a specific medical need for it? So unless your T3 has been over range, what was the reason for reducing and the intend to reduce even further?

As you know T3 is the active thyroid hormone and the driver of our metabolism. With too little T3 available, we can run into all sorts of problems including increased cholesterol, difficulties in processing glucose and the inability to lose weight.

It was a bit over range. Had crippling anxiety. Improved a bit since reduction.

Ah no worries, I hope you will find a level that will suit you better.

I found that ferritin and Vitamin D are quite important for me, and since my Vitamin D is above 100 nmol/l, I really do feel much better. Same with the ferritin - I have incorporated chicken liver as well and it made quite a difference. It might take a while for the nutrients to get to an optimal level, so be patient - slowly and steadily does the trick!😉

Sad but true I have never been overweight in my 78 years. When I am hungry my hormone kicks in and when I am full the other one tells me to stop.

There are two perhaps yours are not working to well.

Perhaps it's something else greygoose has an idea to.

I forgot the most important thing. Ghrelin kicks in to tell the stomach that it's Hungry .Then Leptin kicks in by the hypothalamus in the brain to feel full.

I also forgot to mention that after my Thyroid was removed and I was put on Levo for the first time I put on 10 lbs in just a few months before changing to NDT. So you could be right about the Hypo thing.

It’s not particularly helpful but lots of people have linked hunger and overeating with being under medicated and others link it with being over medicated.

Thank you that is helpful.
