This might seem trivial or a bit strange to some but I am going to put it out there and see if anyone has any advice. To put things in context I have had multiple hospital stays and procedures for a few years due to rapid heart rate or a very low resting heart rate. . I eventually had a mechanical mitral valve replacement in November as this was seen to be the root cause and unfortunately due to complications after, had to have a pacemaker fitted also (heart rate set to 50). My resting heart rate did seem to settle down to 50/51 following this. Unfortunately since coming home I had a few episodes of rapid heart rate, in one instance resulting in a trip to Resus dept of hospital. So then a week ago it was found I now have overactive thyroid and so I was given a new medication for that (Carbimazole). Since then my resting heart rate has increased to around 65 beats a minute. Now I know this is still a healthy rate and some of you may wonder why I am even mentioning it and I am hoping 🤞 it could be the new medication I am on. I just wondered if anyone else could share any experience they may have had.

Hello Knavesmire :
Carbimazole is an Anti Thyroid drug and generally prescribed when there is a diagnosis of Graves Disease -
Do you have any thyroid blood test to hand - showing a TSH T3 and T4 reading and range -
Do you have any antibody readings there - reading as TPO / TgAB / TSI / TRab / or wording such as a TSH Thyroid Receptor antibody with a single number and a cut off number ?
You might find reading my blog page would help with appreciating how it works.

A short discussion about Carbimazole primarily focussed on splitting doses but containing some other information.

I have hyper from a nodule & I find resting heart rate is closely correlated to where my FT4 & FT3 (thyroid levels) are.
Propranolol was prescribed (along side carbimazole) when first diagnosed & rate was high. Rate went to 50 in lock down as levels likely low but dr wasn’t concerned as no symptoms.
Carbimazole temporarily pauses production of new thyroid hormone so you’d expect FT4 & FT3 to lower & your heart rate to lower inline with it.
I recommend you get a copy (printed or online access) of blood test result & track what your levels are doing.
How much carbimazole have you been prescribed? Important levels are rechecked every 6 weeks & dose adjusted. TSH isn’t reliable adjustments. Must be by FT4 & FT3. Do you take other medications?
Very important the cause of hyper is investigated. Autoimmune hyper (Graves) must be confirmed with positive TRab or TSI antibodies.
Transient hyper / level fluctuations occurs with autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s).
Mital valve prolapse and thyroid issues often go together
Latest research suggests MVP is possibly autoimmune
What are your most recent thyroid and vitamin results
Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 5-7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12 if last test result serum B12 was below 500 or active B12 (private test) under 70:
Ah… just spotted your post on the British Heart Foundation page from a few days ago.
So the doctors are suggesting the hyperthyroidism might have arisen because you’re on amiodorone? That’s definitely a possibility because of the iodine in the amiodorone. Gotta be honest though, not sure that putting you on carbimazole to block the amiodorone is the right way to fix this… unless there isn’t an alternative to the amiodorone?
It just feels a bit counter-intuitive. But I am by no means an expert on this stuff!
waveylines - I seem to remember you’ve had some fun with amiodorone?
Well, the thought of “is there an alternative to amiodorone?” sent me down a rabbit hole and took me here: bhf.org.uk/informationsuppo...
It seems that in some cases, a few weeks of carbimazole will fix the issue. But if it doesn’t, the alternative is a drug called dronedarone which doesn’t affect the thyroid.
