High BP, confusing results, pain in thyroid

I´ll to make a long story short. 😊Hashimotos, diagnosed 12 years ago

I posted previously because after years of being on

125 Eutirox, 15 mcg T3 and 5 mg Amlodipino daily my results were more or less the same for years

TSH 0.07 (0.23-5.50)

FT3 3.45 (2-4.40)

FT4 1.12 (0.80-1.80)

I thought I felt good, BP remained steady and no pain in thyroid.

Middle of October - all of a sudden developed high BP, ended up in the Emergency at the end of October, had problems sleeping, fast heartrate etc before I went to the emergency. They upped Amlodipino to 7.5 mg daily and added 12.5 mcg of hydrocholorthiazide. The doctor told me to check my thyroid medications and told me to lower my dose. Dropped Eutirox to 100 mcg daily and only 5 mcg of T3, BP was okish but I wasn´t feeling 100%. I accidentally forgot to take T3 one day and I felt amazing, the body felt "calm" and I slept really well. This lasted for 4 days and then the pain in the thyroid started. I did a previous post and received suggestions about upping Eutirox to reach a higher FT4 range but it was impossible to raise more at the time and it seems to have happened anyway in December.

19 November the results were the following on 100 mcg Eutirox only

TSH 0.65

FT3 2.76

FT4 1.12

BP was still high but had to add 112 mcg and 5 mcg of T3 because I was feeling blah. 4 December the TSH had risen to 1.43. Not sure which is worse, high BP or sore thyroid.

Since 2 weeks I have been on 125 mcg of Eutirox and 5 mcg of T3. BP is now in normal range but I have pain in the thyroid. I did another blood test today

TSH 0.82

FT3 3.45

FT4 1.46

I find it quite interesting that the FT4 has risen when I am on the same dose of Eutirox as I was for many years, before the high BP incident. The FT3 is also the same as it was when I was taking more of the T3 medication. So probably the T3 medication stops your own thyroid from working properly!? and suppresses it somehow? Maybe the thyroid has kicked into action again but maybe that is also why I have pain in the thyroid again. Anyone can enlighten me as to what is going on?

All my vitamins and minerals are checked and I am supplementing the ones that are needed. Quite a few of them. I have added magnesium and potassium and I started taking NAC again which I haven`t taken for about 10 months. I am on HRT since many years.

I would like to try to come off the BP medication and I think the only way is to get really fit again and lose 5-6 kgs.

It is hard to get the meds, supplements etc right. 😱

Hi, sorry you haven’t had a reply in a few hours.

I’m not familiar with the other medications you are taking so I’m not sure what interactions there might be.

If I understand correctly

Original dose 125/15 -BP and symptoms

Mid Oct 100/5 - BP better but pain in thyroid

Nov 100 - feeling bleh

Mid Dec 112/5 - BP good but not better yet

What I can see is this is quite a bit of changing without a chance for each dose change to truly settle. My prescriber likes to wait 12 weeks.

How are your vitamins? Diet and absorption?

remember with Hashimoto’s sometimes you can end up with moving goalposts and the less changes you make the better to enable everything to stabilise. Good that you are testing regularly but it’s a bit too regularly to know for sure. 👍

Hi, thank you. Yes you are probably right, I just need to wait for everything to settle and then do another test in 8 weeks time. When you are not feeling 100% it's not easy to be patient. Diet, vitamins etc are fine. I do test and take supplements .

100% agree, I always regret tweaking too many things too often. But the temptation is huge when you don’t feel right 🌱

Hi, I have figured it out finally. It was the hydrochlorothiazide medication the doctor at the emergency ward added to the list of medications. Been going crazy and feeling horribly unwell with so much pain in the thyroid. Off that medication since 4 days and I have returned from death´s door and I feel so much better. I made another post about it. 😊

I am so glad to hear you found the culprit. Do you think it was one of the excipients (fillers)? Or the diuretic itself?

The diuretic itself. My blood pressure is perfect without it. Almost got too low after I stopped it so reduced the Amlodipino a little bit. I don't think I ever needed it anyway, should just have reduced the thyroid meds back in October

So good to have that figured out. Excellent work, hope your wellness continues on the new trajectory 🙏👏
