Happy new year folks ! I was wondering if anyone can help . I switched to vencamil 100 mcg a few months ago and was feeling great . My last blood results were 4.79 time before that 0.89 .
The past 10 days i have been overheating and have had headaches and earache . I was prescribed antibiotics for sinusitis and ear infection for 5 days which I finished yesterday but lastnight the insomnia and overheating was really bad . Still awake at 4am . I think i managed a few hrs sleep if I was lucky .
Could this be symtoms of my levothyroxine dose being too high or too low .
Very confused

Hi thanks for your reply . I haven't got a clue about the other blood results. I think I will have to make an appointment with my gp to discuss how I'm feeling and ask for more bloods to be done. But sometimes they're reluctant to do them if it's only been 3 months since the last one . But thank you so much for your advice it's greatly appreciated.
Monitor my health and Medichecks are uk websites. You can browse their offered tests, both offer thyroid panels. You can sign up and choose what you like, finger prick or venous draw and order. It's really convenient.
See/contact GP for further testing - TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 plus vitamin D, folate,B12 and ferritin
Or just request increase of 25mcg
Or get full testing privately
What vitamin supplements are you taking
Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins
If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test
If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal
Monitor My Health (NHS private test service) offer thyroid and vitamin testing, plus cholesterol and HBA1C for £65
Thank you so much for sharing this information. My gp told me to take my levothyroxine when getting a blood test but am I right in saying that I was wrongly advised . I don't take any vitamin supplements as I wasn't sure if it would interfere with levothyroxine.
I was on depakote for over 15 years for bipolar but have been off it for 7 weeks . Does anyone know if depakote can affect your thyroid . Not sure now if my bipolar symptoms have been connected to my thyroid .
I am also going to see if I can get checked to see if I have hashimotos disease.
If I don't get the bloods checked from my gp i will be seeing about contacting one of the companies you suggested. Thanks
Oh myyyyy gosh !!!! I have read some of the links you've sent me and it does make me wonder alot .I had glandular fever in 1984 at the age of 14 and was extremely exhausted and felt depressed for a long time .
In 1989 i was feeling off so my thyroid was checked but gp wasn't sure what dosage to prescribe hence saw a consultant and was told nothing wrong with thyroid all symtoms due to stress .
In 1992 i became very depressed then very manic , my drink had been spiked with crac cocaine in November 1991 . I was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in the January 1992 for about 3 months , and told I'd had a nervous breakdown , query bipolar . But at this time I had a very enlarged goitre but was told I didn't have hypothyroidism.....
In May 1993 I got married and because I was homesick suffered depression and put on prozac .
Came off it in the August as I wanted family . Had my beautiful daughter in May 1994 and again after I had a goitre , no bloods were taken .
January 1995 I had postpartum pshycosis and hospitalised for 4 months again i had a goiter but was diagnosed as bipolar . Put on lithium and other antipsychotic meds .
I managed to stay stable for 5 years and came off meds as it was questioned if my symptoms were hormone related but bloods still normal . But hence to say I relasped a year later and back in hospital and lithium but yet again I had a goiter.
It took years for my bloods to finally show that I needed thyroxine and then later swapped from lithium to depakote as lithium hadccaused nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.
My last admission to hospital was 9 yrs ago and yes I was on thyroxine but wasn't taking it properly.
I have been taking it properly for the past few months and making sure I get vencamil at all times as before I was on accord then it would sometimes be swapped weekly depending what brand the pharmacist had . So this could explain my moods being all over the place .
This just makes me wonder if I was wrongly diagnosed but it's been 33 years since my first psychotic episode .
Guess I need a very long chat with my gp and mental health team.
Oh my gosh !!! I've read the first link and I can totally see a connection and I also get lots of coldsores . One time I was psychcotic my face was covered in them but nope no blood tests were done to check if glandular fever was still present or for hashimotos . I have so many questions to be asking my mht and gp as I defo don't think they saw a link .
Hi, I’m taking 75mcg of Vencamil and overheating and itching my forearms. It’s driving me nuts. Today I started having a buzzing feeling in my chest. I can’t believe I’m over medicated because I have no Thyroid and 75 is a low dose. I’m wondering if it’s the make of tablet.
Mmmmmm this is very interesting have you recently started taking vencamil and where you on a different brand before ? And is there any chance you've lost weight and maybe need your dose altered .Maybe you should ask your gp to check your bloods .
Hope this helps , unfortunately I'm not that clued up on levothyroxine.
Yes i changed from Accord, Endo changed me because I am intolerant to lactose. I wish I had lost weight, , since having my thyroid removed I have gained a stone, exercising, PT trainer and doing 5 and 2 diet, I only lose 1k. I am seeing my GP tomorrow, waited 3 months for face to face appointment
All the best when you see your gp and please don't let them fob you off . Waiting 3 months for a face to face is shocking !! I have reread over the vencamil information leaflet and it does seem that some of our side effects could be related to the vencamil. But it's confusing cause it also states that it gould to due to dosage being to high , but like you say you're on a low dose of 75mcg . Hope your gp can give you some answers.
Thank you for your reply . Yes it is difficult to pin point the cause . I have been told that I'm postmenopausal but I believe that you can still have menopausal symtoms for a number of years after . My periods stopped 2 and a half years ago .
Hi thanks for your reply . My gp tried me with hrt patches oestrogen ones about 8 months ago although I said anything hormonal can make me feel worse as it did when I took the contraceptive pill when younger and also when given the mirena coil which has progesterone. I had the patches on for 2 days and I felt extremely depressed and moods all over the place . Hence to say after a fewcdays of removing patches I felt much better . The gp was very apologetic for not listening to me and dismissing what I was saying .
Every time I went to see my gp with physical complaints I was told it was stressed related then finally menopausal. But since coming of my depakote many of my physical symtoms have stopped . So yeah I'm still thinking it could be thyroid connected the overheating and sinus problems 😕
HRT is a tricky customer and it can take many months for the body to settle on it. It’s always advised (a bit like thyroid in this regard) to wait 3 months to let the body get used to the new hormones before deciding if it’s not for you. When I first started on patches I too felt absolutely dreadful, for at least 2 months. I changed to a private menopause specialist to find the right type for me and found very small doses of bioidentical oestrogen gel was much better tolerated. The patches contain synthetic oestrogen (which has higher risks associated with it) plus is at a set dose which is released continuously into your body. I think most GPs offer this as first line but it doesn’t suit many people to start with. Have a read about bio identical HRT. I’m not here to push it on you at all and many folk can’t afford private I appreciate that. Also it doesn’t suit everyone, but certainly it takes time and the right dose and form for you, which often involves some trial and error with guidance of a menopause specialist. Most GPs don’t have a clue about this (although they are getting a little bit better and prescribing instead of saying you don’t need it, you’re just anxious etc). Since being on it I’ve not had anymore ear problems and fewer hot episodes. If I do get hot, I add some gel to my arm and it stops. That’s how I know it’s my oestrogen. It’s not a magic fix all by any means, but I wanted to share my experience. As you say, it may not be related at all, but perhaps don’t rule it out based on a few bad days on patches.
To repeat what GussyG has said - I have read that it can take several months and also starting on a very low dose to get used to it, like levo. Never too late to start.
