Aphthous Stomatitis and hypothyroidism

I was diagnosed as hypothyroid nearly 4 years ago, and am currently taking Armour 3,25 grains daily split 3 ways, which seems to be working OK-ish at present.

Over the last 3-4 years I have been experiencing recurrent episodes of Aphthous Stomatitis.

Has anyone on the forum experience and/or knowledge of this disorder, particularly regarding a connection to thyroid disease, but also how to effectively treat it - or even cure it?

I would be grateful for any info.

hi there,

Sorry you have been waiting quite a long time for an answer. This reply should bump it up the message board.

I had to Google Aphthous Stomatitis, am I correct in finding it’s a canker sore/mouth ulcer?

What have you tried so far?

When did you last test your thyroid hormone levels?

Thank you for responding

Yes, Aphthous Stomatitis is canker sores, sore mouth/throat/lips etc., and pretty unpleasant. It is something that has developed since my hypo diagnosis and treatment, and I had thought that maybe it was a meds side effect. Thyroid levels pretty decent currently (last test 4 weeks ago)

humanbean has given me some sound advice that I will be acting on, and janeroar has flagged up Behcet's disease which I will research further. This gives me a good starting point.

Thank you, again

I have a long history (many, many years) of having multiple mouth ulcers. They have reduced in number and severity in the last 3 or 4 years. The things that have helped me the most are :

1) Raising my level of serum B12 to 1000 ng/L or higher.

Raising my level of Active B12 to 150 pmol/L or higher.

I use methylcobalamin supplements in a dose of 1000 micrograms per day - they can be bought from most websites that sell supplements.

stichtingb12tekort.nl/engli...

If your B12 gets to a level you are happy with you can continue taking the same product that raised your level but reduce the number of days you take it for maintenance.

2) Aiming for a level of folate of 20 micrograms/L

I use methylfolate supplements in a dose of 800 - 1000 micrograms per day - they can be bought from most websites that sell supplements.

3) I use fluoride-free toothpaste.

4) I use an antiseptic mouthwash once a day in the evening - specifically this one :

superdrug.com/mouth-ulcer-t...

It comes in two flavours - Peppermint and Original. Personally, I prefer Original.

5) This was a recent find that has worked wonders for me - it reduces pain, reduces the number of ulcers I get, speeds up healing, and reduces the size of the ulcers that I still get.

Bee Health Propolis Throat Spray. It used to be sold in bottles of 30 ml and 50 ml, but I can only find it in the smaller bottles now. It also comes in other forms e.g. lozenges.

amazon.co.uk/Bee-Health-Pro...

I haven't tried any other brands or forms than the link above, but I might do that one day.

Thank you for your message.

This is very interesting as my folate has been very low recently (currently supplementing) and my B12 has been rock bottom in the past, and I have to watch it constantly. I will definitely try the super drug mouth wash, change my toothpaste and check the link. I love that people on this site know a thing or two, drawn from experience.

Thank you

I have this problem too and I was diagnosed with Behçet’s disease. Do you have of these symptoms? As you know I’m sure that you’re much more likely to be diagnosed with an autoimmune condition if you have a pre existing one such as Hashimotos

Thank you for your reply.

I have just checked the symptoms of Behcet's disease. I think that in my case, my symptoms (apart from the mouth ulcers/sore mouth and lips) are probably not Behcet's. But I am glad of the advice and will monitor the situation carefully.

Best wishes
