Depression or Hypothyroid?

Hi everyone,

I am on thyroid medication (currently under medicated on T4 but was on T3 only at the time) and antidepressants and I am quite sure that when I started the antidepressants I felt much better mood wise. Does this mean that my depression is actual “depression depression” or is it “thyroid depression”? Is there any way of knowing the difference?

Any replies gratefully received! Thanks!

What kind of antidepressants are you taking and for how long? What doses of hormones (levo & T3) are you taking and what are the values of your analyses?

Am on 200mg sertraline and have been for 2 years or so. My mood has never been this good probably my whole life. Lots of things to be miserable about, thyroid etc etc and I do have bad days but I do have a kind of content/positive feeling some of the time which is nice. I am just wondering if I get my thyroid hormones right whether I’ll be able to stop the sertraline or whether I’ll still need it.

Currently only taking 50mcg levo (have gone backwards) but when I started the sertraline I was on 50mcg T3 only. Can’t remember latest bloods off the top of my head but I’m due my next lot next week!

Make sure to test all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Which brand Levo are you taking

How long have you been on this dose

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Are you taking your levothyroxine at least two hours away from all medications and such

Thanks SlowDragon. I’m booked in for 8.40am! Really hoping I don’t oversleep 😕

I’m taking Accord I think but have only been on it for 6 weeks. Have also been on B12 for 6 weeks following a low blood result. Restarted Calcium and D3 the other day too.

I actually take most of my tablets in the morning - levo included. I thought it was just iron and calcium you had to keep separate from levo?

You need to take ALL supplements and medications at least 2 hours away from levothyroxine

Iron and vitamin D tablets at least 4 hours away from levothyroxine

Vitamin D tablets best taken with high fat meal…..usually evening meal

Vitamin D mouth spray can be taken an hour away from levothyroxine. Mouth spray often gives better results than tablets

Test twice yearly when supplementing

Can test via NHS private testing service

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function.

There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7.

One spray = 1000iu

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with thyroid issues we frequently need higher dose than average

Web links about taking important cofactors - magnesium and Vit K2-MK7

Magnesium best taken in the afternoon or evening, but must be four hours away from levothyroxine

Ah ok. Thanks I didn’t realise. Will have to have a think and rejig things. I’m also hoping to start iron supplements again once I’ve spoken to my endo in a couple of weeks time. Thanks for all the helpful info! Will have a read.

have you tested calcium

Generally don’t supplement calcium unless tested and low

Calcium 4 hours away from Levo too

No haven’t had Calcium tested I don’t think but private endo on the Thyroid Uk list has requested it be prescribed to protect my bones from osteoporosis due to other medications I take.

It’s a Calcium and D3 combo tablet
