Has anyone else had a Full Clotting Screen

I don't recall having this test before, and was quite shocked to note

PT. 10.1. (10.3 - 13.3)

INR. 0.8. (0.8 - 1.2)

The PT is put of range on the low side

INR is JUST inside the correct measure.

Worried I might getting a surprise blood clot some time soon.

Why would there be a problem with blood clotting? I would be interested in any views please?

This is a thyroid support group, hence you might not get too many replies. Did you mean to post this here or a different group?

Yes I did. The blood tests I had done were for thyroid. (Thyroid cancer 20 years ago) which is why I was puzzled to have this test. Wondering if anybody else with thyroid issues/cancer have had the same.......

That's a thought could post this question on a blood support group. Do you have any suggestions where I could ask this question please?

I don't really know of other groups, there is an antocoagulation group which doesnt seem to be very busy:

PT = Prothrombin Time

INR = International Normalised Ratio

labtestsonline.org.uk/tests...

I've never had either of the tests you mention and I'm not on drugs to thin my blood, so I don't have any personal experience of having a PT or INR test done, but just some thoughts I had ...

Did you see a doctor with lots of bruises?

Are you on warfarin or something that does the same job, or does your doctor think you might have a problem with excessive or insufficient clotting?

I've heard of INR being tested in people on drugs to thin the blood.

Are you waiting for surgery? Because your clotting would be important then.

Have you had a Full Blood Count and had high or low levels of Platelets?

Thank you for your response.

I am not on drugs to thin my blood

No, not seen a doctor with lots of bruises

When I went to the hospital to see the Endocrinologist (they request to see me from time to time) (a different person every visit), I requested a print off of my bloods, I went to look at them and he said rather curtly "you can look at them home", I responded, by telling him that I wanted to look at them while in my appointment". I quickly surfed through feeling under pressure and didn't notice the Blood Clotting Screen. Quite bizarre behaviour of the Endocrinologist, he seemed to be in a hurry, I went in as soon as I arrived at reception which was 4 minutes early and was out in a thrice.......

I have an issue with my calcium as 21 years ago when my thyroid was removed, the surgeon "accidently took out a parathyroid/or some parathyroids. It has affected my PTH and calcium. I have upped my Alfacalcidol/K2/Vit D3 lately. If anything the K2 I take is on the low side.

The rest of my blood results were all tickety boo.

No I am not waiting surgery

Full blood count all normal.

This is my cynicism coming out, but perhaps the blood tests were for the endocrinologist so he could look for ammunition to justify lowering your dose of thyroid hormones.

That's a thought! They had reduced my Levothyroxine to 75 but I also have T3. I told him I wanted it back to 100, as the lower dose didn't suit me. He said he would do so and write to my doctor......Curious and curiouser!

Do you have any clues as to why they tested in the first place? Interesting that it was done at all isn’t it?

Undertreated hypothyroidism can reduce INR—are you optimally treated at the moment?

Taking too much Vitamin K can also make blood more prone to clot.

And it could potentially be a Vitamin B deficiency thing—too little vitamin B results in raised homocysteine levels which can make the blood “thicker” for want of a better word.

Other things that might have temporarily affected a blood result—dehydration, either because it was hot and you hadn’t drunk enough or an episode of vomiting and that other thing that often goes with vomiting.

Isn't it specifically K1 that can increase clotting? Or have I got that wrong, and K2 affects clotting as well?

I think they both do. In different ways.

Yes it is very interesting and strange.

I appear to be optimally treated, and feel ok.

I take K2, and if anything I haven't taken enough within the ratio of D3

I take a quality Vitamin B complex as recommended on here by the late Seaside Susie, which seems to suit me

Yes the dehydration might have been an issue, but mostly I drink plenty. But no vomiting or the other thing.

I think I will write a letter to the hospital and ask them why they did the test, and explain the result. I know it will be a bit of a waste of time, but it might throw some light on the issue.

Thanks for trying to help.

Please post them here if you do. This is interesting and I, for one, would be quite curious as to why they would do this test in someone who is not taking any blood thinning medications.
