RIP Maggie Smith

Maggie Smith one of our greatest tv, screen and theatre actresses passed away today aged 89.

She'd had a lot of health issues including surviving breast cancer and Graves disease, which led to her experiencing problems with her eyes and puffiness around her face. Which led to her looking, as she said " horrible".

I was a big fan of hers and she will be sadly missed.

A superb actress who earned all of her accolades and yet remained down to earth. I remember her Miss Jean Brodie (that nobody surpassed) and the fabulous performance as the Lady in the Yellow Van as well as her unmatched formidable Lady Grantham in Downton Abbey.

I wish her peaceful rest and thanks for the entertainment she gave.

Yes, I loved her very much as the dowager in downtown.

I loved her in a Room With A View, such a great film with so many gifted actors. I'm not normally a rom com fan but the story, acting, scenery and music never fail to make me fall in love with Italy all over again.

Such a great character actress, cousin Charlotte, the fussy, irritating spinster cousin who had a heart of gold.

As decorative as Helena Bonham Carter and Julian Sands were in that film as the romantic leads, it was the performances of so many great actors in the lesser roles that leant such warmth and comedy to that film.

There was also the beautiful Ladies In Lavender with the equally great Judi Dench…

Gosh she always seemed to be enjoying herself no matter what part she was playing. I have been watching her all these years and never made the connection with ‘those eyes’. RIP Maggie.

Yes, a very sad loss. Strangely I'd not connected her eyes with thyroid issues, but now you mention it, it makes sense. That stare simply became part of her characterisation.
