I posted at the beginning of the year asking for advice about liquid levothyroxine. My adult son has Hashimotos and can’t tolerate any tablet or liquid levothyroxine at 100mcg as he experiences chest pains.
He takes 75mcg Teva tablet and is very unwell.
I would be grateful if anyone who is on liquid levothyroxine could let me know if they have been able to source Brill Pharma liquid levothyroxine ok?
Thank you ❤️

I am on 100mcg and tend to be given whatever liquid Levo is available. A few times I’ve been given Brill and quite liked it but to be honest I don’t find much difference between any of them. I get Zentiva and Teva mostly. While I liked Brill was the applicator was a bit better and also the taste, but honestly there is not much between them really.
Thank you for your replies. My son hasn’t had any blood tests this year. He has severe anxiety agoraphobia and is too anxious for the dr to visit the house. I can’t afford private tests but thank you again for the reminder as I need to somehow get these blood tests sorted.
Your son should be getting tested more frequently than once a year. My gp does mine every 3 months without fail and has done for 5 years now. I think you need to approach your gp and request the tests. If gp refuses ask on what grounds and then speak with the surgery manager. Thyroid blood tests cost literally pennies. I would urge you to get your son tested as soon as you can. Go to Patches on line and make a request that way. You should get an answer very quickly rather than waiting to talk to a gp. Tell them within Patches your son’s symptoms.
I have used 75mcg Brill Pharma liquid level in the past. However, I found 50mcg Mercury Pharma liquid levothyroxine better. You just change the dose accordingly to your daily dose advised. The pharmacist works it out for you. I split my dose in two. I take half midday then second half about 5pm. I find splitting the dose helps myself and avoids any spiking. I’ve had no supply issues with Mercury Pharma liquid levothyroxine also.
I think you posted a while back, in January, and are in Scotland, possibly Glasgow area. I answered your post then. The current situation is that Alliance have purged Brillpharma in Scotland, and no one else seems to be supplying it in Scotland either. It is freely available for those in the Newcastle area, from both Alliance and Phoenix distributors, and other parts of England. Very difficult, nigh impossible to get anyone to try to order it from England for you. If you were able to wait 10 days for a prescription, Boots in Stirling would possibly attempt to get it for you. If you got it you would need to collect in Stirling. Unless your prescription could be sent to them electronically, you would also need to take the prescription to Stirling. This was the situation about 4 months ago. They may not be attempting to get it now. There are long term manufacturing issues with it. That was as much as I could find out. End of conversation, phone call cut off abruptly from one pharmacy prepared to cite manufacturing issues. The last time I used it , when I had been on it long term for 5 months (75 mcg strength), my blood results dropped about 30% all of a sudden. This absolutely could have been my thyroid misbehaving. The fact that all of a sudden it was unobtainable in Scotland, and purged here, makes me wonder if they are having problems with potency. Your son, I believe you said previously, is very ill on anything but 75 mcg strength Brillpharma. I think Brillpharma , when potency is consistent, is POSSIBLY very slightly weaker than the other liquids. It appears because Teva levo tablets are the only other 75 mcg strength made levo medication , you have been switched to Teva tablets. These contain mannitol and make many people ill. He should get these replaced as soon as possible. Zentiva liquid may be stronger than the other liquids, so you should avoid this. Currently, in Scotland it is Teva liquid which is available. A prescription of 50 mcg strength liquid Teva , he would take 7.5 for his dose of 75 mcg. The syringe measures 5 + he would take another measure of 2.5 on top of this. Perhaps try the liquid Teva at a dose of 73 mcg (5+2.3) strength. It could be that only Brillpharma suited him as it might be slightly weaker than the others, and when he took another liquid, was slightly over-dosed. The Mercury Pharma liquid , you would have trouble getting as Alliance is the sole distributor and they seem to be creating stock shortages where none exist.
Edit: A syringe measures 5. BUT, some syringes , if you pull a full syringe, take up more than a dose of 5. This has caught me out in the past. The Brillpharma syringe was changed within the past year. It used to have a long , white syringe. Then a short, stubby, clear syringe was supplied . ALWAYS, when drawing up a full syringe, check you are stopping at the number 5. Otherwise, you are changing the dose, which might make him ill.
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply I really appreciate it. My son tried every other brand of liquid and felt ill on them apart from Brill Pharma. It’s interesting what you say about the difference in strengths, maybe that was the problem. I’ll have a think and talk with my son about liquid and tablet brand change.
