Puffy face when hypo,why?

Hi, I have seen that a puffy face is listed as a hypo symptom but does anyone know why this happens? Is it fluid retention, general weight gain, inflammation? Or maybe a combination of things?

I think I get this, including puffy bags under my eyes but weight wise I am a healthy weight, fit and active, normal BMI. It is frustrating!

I think mine was related to mucin or myxodema the classic swelling that used to be used for diagnosis in the good old days.

Friends looked at old photos recently and said it’s better than Botox 🤣 unfortunately I had terrible dysmorphia and didn’t recognise the face in the mirror.

Occasionally a food or environmental allergen (hotel room is a classic) or sulphites will give me puffy eyes. I find Allevia anti histamines help (others have lactose).

possibly mucin , or maybe a bit of everything...... my face does this when hypo (specifically, it goes lumpy / waxy looking around the bridge of my nose/ eye's) , even though rest of me never goes overweight .

a more technical answer may be in here , haven't read it to see if it's any good , being lazy just plucked it off google :

The good news about hypo-caused puffy eyes is that is does get better when treated.

Nothing like feeling soooo old waking up to a puffy face and eyes. The worst, as far as vanity goes, if you ask me.

In addition to mucin, which many people talk about here, I’ve also read that since hypo slows our metabolism, and throws off our hormonal system in general, this then also has a knock on effect with our kidneys - which are the organs that filter our blood but also decide how much water we need to keep or dump. Hypo messes with the signals our body overall sends to our kidneys and we end up retaining more water.

Not weight gain, unless of course you’ve gained weight too : )

Makes sense, another frustrating symptom especially with hashi hyper swings, hashimotos is so annoyingly difficult to control I am finding. Thanks for the replies!

I used to have nice “chubby “ cheeks even though I was always slim. It’s only been in the last 3 years or so after improving my T3 levels that I’ve noticed my face is much thinner & saggier around the jaw 😢 it’s as though I’ve aged about 10 years. As per Regeneallotment my friends too comment on the Botox effect of being hypo!

I’ve noticed it on my tummy area too & in the upper eyes. I now notice friends & colleagues who have the heavy lid & arched/lifted eyebrow look which I think is hypo from mucin build up.

Think what it must be like on the inside if we notice the effects on the skin - eg organs like the heart.

So I will take being old & haggard looking !
