Hydroxychloroquine side effect

I’m female 50yrs and I’ve been taking 200mg hydroxychloroquine daily for 4 months for arthritis, pain hair loss, palpitations (the list goes on) I was diagnosed with fibro 8 years ago and am under investigation for lupus. I found Hydroxy miraculous and got my life back and felt part of the world again but I developed complete hearing loss in one ear and my consultant advised me via their secretary on the phone to stop taking this. That was over a month ago, it is now August and all my symptoms have returned and I’m unable to see my consultant until the end of Oct ‘24 for revision of meds. Has anyone else had this side effect of Hydroxy? This med really worked for me and I’m afraid to go on a stronger med. However, I really need treatment.

You'v posted on a thyroid group and hydroxychloroquine isn;t a medicine that many will be taking here.

There is a Lupus group you could try.

Hi Shlein. I have been taking 2 x 200 hydroxychloroquine daily for nearly 4 years (for frontal fibrosising alopecia).

I have been sent for eye tests which have not shown any problems - as this medication can cause eye problems. I have been tested for lupus and Sjorgens - all ok.

I already have hearing loss due to ear infection about 10 years ago which left permanent large hole in ear membrane. Hearing has got worse but nothing as alarming as your total loss. I was not aware hydroxy could cause this.

Has your hearing improved since stopping?
