Hoarse

There always seems to be something going on with me these days. For the past few weeks, maybe a little longer, I find my voice is hoarse towards the end of the day and my throat a little sore/painful. I do ascribe it to my thyroid; would that be a common symptom? I’ve been treated with levothyroxine for two years with I suppose a good outcome insofar as it goes.

Thanks.

Yes, it's pretty common. I often lose my voice at the end of the day - especially if I haven't used it much. And I've been optimally treated for years. Still happens, though. :)

Thanks for the reassurance greygoose. I’m wondering whether to have it checked as I read Hashis have a higher incidence of (rare) thyroid cancer - except my doc will be sick of the sight of me lately!

Well, that's his job, that's what he's paid for, checking out health problems that are worrying people. Make him earn his money! lol

I could have silent reflux.

I have the exact same symptom. Not only does it become hoarse towards the end of the day but it also feels underpowered.

Interestingly if your menopause age it is also a menopause symptom.

Yes. I love to sing and that’s been a no-no for a good long while.

Beyond menopause, lol!

I use my voice professionally and so have always been aware of this phenomena. It almost feels as if someone has pulled the plug.

I know adjusting my meds higher does not help so we may just be stuck with it ! 🤪

It would be prudent to seek assessment from an ENT physician and a speech-language pathologist. The ENT will view it through a medical lens and the SLP through a functional lens, eg your vocal mechanics and habits. In Canada we have some voice clinics where you can access diagnostic imaging, and physicians and SLPs work together.

Thank you. I can almost guarantee that won’t happen here in UK. I’ll probably have blood tests and perhaps a scan, if GP has concerns.

Is it possible to see a SLP privately, once your GP completes a medical workup?

An SLP is a Speech and Language Professional?

Speech-language pathologist…in the UK you might call them SLT - speech-language therapist? You would want to see one who specializes in voice issues.
