Hi, I live with hypothyroidism, which is under control (minus the day skin and brittle hair, which could be more hormone based, I’m 53, I’m too nervous to take HRT) that aside does anyone else go through troubled times, be it mentally or physically and two/three weeks later I feel as if my thyroid has altered and I’m left shattered. My question being could anyone recommend something I can take to help support my thyroid during ‘troubled’ times to stop the aftershock happening?

many thanks all.

difficult to say without knowing your latest blood test results for FT3 and FT4 and what state your vitamin levels are but I would guess that you aren’t on quite a high enough dose of thyroid hormones and potentially have autoimmune (GP can test for TPO antibodies you can test for the TGAb ones privately) which can cause the levels to swing around a bit.

Plus (I’m 50 so similar in terms of cycle/perimenopause also not on HRT after a bad experience in my 40s and awaiting a genetics appointment for cancer risk) so our hormones are likely swinging up and down. A colleague told me that oestrogen can vary hour to hour! I think HRT smooths this out but then also often requires a dose increase for thyroid hormones too.

Interesting, thanks for replying. I haven’t been tested for about 4 months now. Vitamin wise I only take magnesium theriante, tumeric and evening primrose oil. How did you get the genetics appointment for cancer risk, sounds like a good idea. Thanks so much.

I was referred by the women’s health nurse who prescribes HRT at my GP practice, she trained at the same place the Louise Newsome practitioners trained so I’m very lucky there. She was about to prescribe me urtogestan and Lenzetto but I said I was worried as my Ancestry DNA data (when I searched on it) shows BCRA 2 and a few other genetic mutations for various cancers, grandma had breast cancer, aunty had thyroid cancer, Mum has various basal carcinomas) they’ve done a full family history search and asked for the ancestry download (no one had done tho sir own search before, they were quite surprised … I won’t know till mid October, the wait for an appointment is over 12 months. That’s after a 7 month wait for them to look at my info. 🌱

Regarding peri/ menopause , it may be useful to have a look at Dr Louise Newson’s free Balance App, as I find it really useful for comparing HRT medications & having up to date research articles. There is also an ability to post questions.
