Inflammation?

Hey all, just wondering about inflammation and pain. I understand it's part of Hashimotos but I'm kind of wondering what people mean by it as such?I've been having episodes of 2/3 days of different symptoms that may be 'inflammation' I guess.

Pain in an old scar tissue

Chest pain

Hip pain

Leg pain

Neck pain

Tail bone pain

Indigestion

Nausea

They all come and go, it's very random. Each is pretty intense and painful for a few days then it disappears again! I'm hoping they will ease off once I'm on a high enough dose because it's really tedious.

I'm gluten (fairly recently) and dairy free (ish)

You were pretty under replaced only a month ago when you posted results with TSH over 3. Quite likely its just that.

Have you made an increase of levo now?

Thanks Jaydee, yes I'm 4 weeks into 100mcg. Hoping these symptoms subside soon :(

You may well need a further increase depending on results after 6-8 weeks on that dose.

Hang in there.

Yeah I guess so, especially as I don't feel a huge amount better on 100!

My understanding is that systemic inflammation is part of the autoimmune process (I assume you have autoimmune thyroiditis). Even if the thyroid hormone levels are within optimal interval, the autoimmune activity and the presence of antibodies (such as anti-thyroid peroxidase and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies) can contribute to an inflammatory state, the symptoms of which can be very volatile. Chronic inflammation, even at low levels, can also have metabolic effects, that are contributing to broader systemic implications.

However, optimizing thyroid hormones and lifestyle modifications (exercise, excluding certain foods, stress reduction etc.) can go a long way. I'm not sure that systemic inflammation can ever be completely conquered when an autoimmune condition is present. It all seems to be a constant trial and error type of battle. And what works or doesn't is very individual. That's why a community like this one is so important, because somebody somewhere will be successful trying something. And if their experience is shared, it might just be the thing that also will work for somebody else. I found that this affliction demands a lot of patience. And the celebration of every victory, no matter how small. Best wishes.

As you have noticed, I'm having a rough time right now. What I have started, because it seems to have helped in the past with this condition, is taking NAC. It is a powerful antioxidant and anti inflammatory. As far as I know it is safe to take when following the directions. It takes a while to kick in, though (and might not work for everybody, of course). One step at a time. :)

Yes I'm sorry to hear things are not great for you at the moment. I've never heard of NAC, so I'll go and have read up about that, thank you :)

You could take a look at turmeric and curcumin too 🤗

That comes highly recommended. It's on my daily consumption list, either as food or supplement. Very good idea (and NAC for emergencies ;) ). :D

Best to keep it at a reasonable spice-usage level: over-use of turmeric supplements, along with other herbal preparations, can cause liver damage. Even cinnamon should be restricted to 1/2 tsp per day, which isn't much for those with a "habit".

Low FT3 causes all these and inflammation too,

For me cutting dairy reduced inflammation and pain hugely. Took a month to feel the effect. Before that all my muscles were sore and minimal use could cause muscle pain.

Since cutting dairy all the general soreness went away. I do get some pain in specific muscles from use but nowhere near the extent of before. I assume the remaining issues are from my thyroid levels.

Thanks Obsidian, I need to be more strict with my dairy free (been intolerant to cows milk since birth) butter and parmesan don't seem to cause a reaction but maybe I need to cut them out too :(

This is interesting ... I've been experiencing hip and lower back pain for the first time this year, it hadn't occurred to me these symptoms might be linked to either Hashimoto's, inflamation or under-replacement. I hope your symptoms are settling.

Yes it seems so! I've had Tail bone pain for a long time (thought it was child birth related!) But it has actually started to get a bit better recently..hopefully that will continue as I'm on a full dose :)

I had this and put it down to childbirth too but as soon as I started on levothyroxine it disappeared. It comes back if I’m under medicated but soon goes away again when my dose is increased, it’s very odd!

Haha such a weird symptom! Really annoying though, not being able to sit comfortably

From the other comments it looks like you have been changing levels of medication recently.

I have found this rustles up even old symptoms I have not experienced for many years.

When submerged in all this Sh1t, I often think how much easier I make it for my medics by just staying away. It’s like there will be another list of different symptoms maybe tomorrow. It’s all very unsettling.

Personally if I wanted to explore my symptoms (and I have in the past) I would need to take up residence in the GP surgery.

One day I will likely miss something important, just because they think hypothyroids over rate their symptoms.

It’s a lousy system which medics fail to fully comprehend.

Not what you're looking for?
