optimal testosterone level?

Hi,

I hope it’s ok to ask here because I wasn’t sure where else to ask and couldn’t find anything useful from Google.

My husband had his testosterone tested. His levels are 13.6 nmol/l (8.6 - 29.0)

Doctors have said it’s fine and no action needed but I know that normal doesn’t always mean optimal. Can anyone offer me any insight please? Thanks

Testosterone levels vary with age. Levels can also vary during the day. Lifestyle factors can also effect levels:

Whilst his reading is within range, If your husband has any adverse symptoms linked to low testosterone, I would look to discuss with his GP, as modifications to diet/ exercise etc may help.

Was the test for total testosterone or free testosterone. There is a difference because the free testosterone is what is available similar to how freeT4 and freeT3 is tested. Total is not an accurate picture of what the body is able to use. A person can have a good level of total but be low in free.

My gynecologist is only testing free testosterone.

Thanks 😊

It just says ‘plasma testosterone level’ on the NHS app. We sent in an econsult with a bunch of symptoms related to sex hormones and they sent a blood form and didn’t speak to us at all so that’s the most I know.

If it is nmol/L then it's total. Free testosterone is pmol/L
