Hospital : Hi M what do you do about meds if you... - Thyroid UK
Hospital
Good question, which has made me hesitant to try NDT. When I was admitted a few years ago, they wouldn’t let me keep my own standard medications…they took them away. Then, frustratingly, they refused to allow me to ensure I wasn’t taking levo close to food. I felt I had no option, despite protesting. Often I had to take it with breakfast!
Take them with you like all your other meds.
Difficult. You have to be obstinate and try to insist that you need your regular thyroid meds.
I was in hospital with covid in January. I had 2 or 3 days without any levo until I managed to persuade them that I needed it. Then I found that they only had one brand on the meds trolley and it wasn't my regular brand. I had to start again with my regular levo brand after I left hospital. I had to explain what my T3 was for, so restarted that too. My supplements were returned to me when I was discharged.
I normally take my thyroid meds with food, so just had to take it when they came round with the meds trolley.
I do wonder if you need as much thyroid meds when you are in hospital. Dr Peatfield said that he taught his patients to increase meds in winter and reduce in summer when they were relaxing when on holiday as they didn't need as much. In hospital you are in bed so not very active, so maybe a reduction would be ok.
Good luck.
Do you have a private Drs letter?
If not I would just bring them in and take them without them knowing.
I’d be inclined to say the same thing, but then again I might be wilfully naïve. Having never been admitted to hospital (other than to have kids) I don’t know what the exact protocol is, but, surely you’re allowed a toiletries bag into which you can secrete pretty much anything you want. Their jurisdiction only extends so far, surely? Or am I missing something?
Wishing you well with your hospital stay, Oliva1955 , take care.
If I was conscious and well enough to do my meds, i would tell them I’m on Armour but I would not hand NDT over to be administered by nurses.
Many thanks for your comment ! I was admitted for an angiogram and overnight stay during the first lockdown! I just didn’t think to sneak in my NDT in my wash bag which I could have easily taken ! When the nurse came round with Levo which I hadn’t been on since my first diagnosis in the USA , she reported me to the Dr . The dr had a very open mind and she wanted to know what NDT was M I told her that the the Uk was so behind in diagnosing and treating Hashimotos and she was very understanding and asked me if there were any books she could read about it !
Dont give them your meds - you will never see them again! I put them in my wash bag. I was never offered any thyroid meds in the 10 days I was in there! If you were on 4 hourly meds, you could be given them anything from 3 hours to 5 hours! On one night shift the two nurses decided it was too much bother to take the drug trolly round - no one got anything. I complained but the chart had been filled in...
If you trust a friend/partner ask them to bring them in if you are kept longer than you thought and hand them over quietly.
Hey there! I've been through a similar situation. If you're admitted to the hospital and on NDT, make sure to inform the medical staff about your medication. It's essential for them to know so they can provide proper care. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
