Bad Breath

I've tried to broaden my search but this seems to be the best community to talk to.I've had bad breath for years, I'm 30 years and I feel now it's taking a toll on me. You can even see colleagues avoiding your breath. My dentist referred me to a general doctor, the gen doc refered me to an ENT doc. The ENT gave loads of meds to treat acid reflux and clogged throat mucus. Deep down i feel the tonsils are the problem since I 've always had tonsil stones. I have managed to remove those stones on my own but to be honest I can brush teeth then an hour later I have throat mucus that smells like hell. Whenever I have a tonsils infection they emit fumes that smell like a dead animal. This bad breath overruns even the smell of a mint chewing gum.

I've made a decision I want this tonsils removed now. Will that help?

My bad breath improved when I was tested for food intolerances and stopped eating the foods I can't tolerate. This also improved my indigestion.

Like you I'd been through the "dentist says it's not my teeth - try the doctor" - "doctor says it's not his problem".

I got my tonsils and adenoids out as a child after I'd had four attacks of tonsillitis in a year. It was an instant improvement in my quality of life that I've never regretted having done, and instead of getting tonsillitis three or four times a year, once my tonsils and adenoids were gone I had three throat infections in 12 years then have never had it since.

I have read of people with tonsil stones finding their breath improves dramatically once the tonsils and adenoids have gone. But I just did a search for "nhs tonsillectomy criteria" and apparently many NHS trusts now only operate if someone has had seven (!!!) attacks of tonsillitis in a year, which sounds like extreme penny pinching to me, and not conducive to being healthy.

Perhaps you might have to go private to get your tonsils out if you could save up the money? I have no idea of the costs though, nor do I know if surgeons working privately use different criteria for tonsillectomy than the NHS.

I did look up what the NHS thinks about halitosis :

nhs.uk/conditions/bad-breath/

and what NICE thinks about it :

cks.nice.org.uk/topics/hali...

and this is what patient.info thinks about it :

Is there a possibility you have infections in your Eustachian tubes or sinuses or your parotid glands. Or possibly Sjogren's Syndrome.

There is no guarantee that your problem starts in your mouth.

Do you have issues with mouth ulcers?

I found that vitamin B12 (specifically methylcobalamin) reduced my problem with mouth ulcers, as did folate supplements (specifically methylfolate NOT folic acid). If this interest you, get your B12 and folate levels measured before deciding if supplementation is required.

.

I'm not a doctor or a dentist, so I can only say that one simple-to-treat cause of halitosis is dehydration, so try and drink more plain water than usual and see if it helps. But clearly you need to find a doctor or dentist or oral surgeon who won't just pass the buck. And I don't know how to find such a person.

I've just noticed you aren't in the UK, you're in Kenya. I don't know anything about medical treatment in Kenya, so I don't know how much help my reply is, but hopefully you'll get something useful out of it.

I feel for you - the dead animal odour is overwhelming (I live in a place where young badgers get run over and flung into a ditch) but I can take another road to avoid it but you are stuck with it (for now).

My first port of call would be to make a gentle mix of quality Tea Tree oil, quality clove oil and without swallowing give yourself a gargle say 3 times a day. Both oils are antiviral and anti microbial. They are too strong on their own and should be mixed (say) 5 drops each with a serving spoon size of olive oil.

Alternatively make some garlic tea - cut a couple of juicy cloves, just cover with hot water - leave to soak for 5 minutes, discard the cloves and then gargle with the "soup" - you can also swallow the brew whereas the essential oil mix is best not ingested.

Another port of call might be looking at how your liver is behaving.

My tonsils and adenoids were removed in 1956 - it was "mode du jour" at the time, they were perfectly healthy parts of my body - it may of course just be coincidence, but after their removal my health went very down hill.

Have you ever been inspected for a deviated septum - I think that can be a cause of post nasal drip/mucus.

I greatly regret having had my tonsils removed aged 16 for recurrent tonsilitis. The infections simply moved deeper down my throat, I gather the tonsils are the first line of defence and without them we are more vulnerable. In your shoes I would try everything else first.
