So scared

Hello everyone In December I was referred to ENT on the 2 week pathway because I had a swelling in my throat. The consultant took some fluid from the lump and they did an ultrasound on my neck. They diagnosed “multiple U2 bilateral thyroid nodules with right thyroid cyst and right level 3 to 4 cervical lymph node - FNAC Thyf1c”. The consultant took me off the pathway and said they wanted to do another ultrasound in early March. This is tomorrow and I’ve been getting more and more anxious about it. I’ve googled (I know I shouldn’t) and I’m really scared. My bloods were apparently all ok in December and again last week but they didn’t check thyroid last week. The lump is bigger and my neck feels uncomfortable. Im sorry for the long post but when I try to read up on things it’s just a minefield. Any kind words reassurance would be greatly appreciated. Im 60 by the way.

Welcome to the forum

Do you have copies of these results

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once to see if your hypothyroidism is autoimmune

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Significant minority of Hashimoto’s patients only have high TG antibodies (thyroglobulin) - NHS currently don’t test TG antibodies unless TPO are high

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease …..and more common as we get older

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Testing options and includes money off codes for private testing

Thank you for your informed reply SlowDragon. I will certainly ask for my test results and post on here. When I’ve asked about my thyroid the GP just said ‘you don’t need to have hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism to have a thyroid cyst’.? I’ve just got myself worked up about tomorrow wondering what they will find and because it’s swollen up again. 😟. Your reply is much appreciated.

That’s true enough

The lump is bigger and my neck feels uncomfortable.

That suggests possibly that your thyroid might be working harder to produce the hormones you need

Often GP will only test TSH

What time of day was December test done?

I can’t remember the exact time but it was in a morning.

I know it is scary to find a lump anywhere on your body - our brains go straight to the C word!

Get your results and come back here, if your thyroid is going balistic trying to produce enough hormones, that is the first thing to sort out. I had nodules, they aspirated twice as they did not believe the first tests, but the nodules disappeared when I was on the (nearly ) right dose.

When I face something scary, I think "right, big girls pants on!" and then imagine big girls pants on the medical team, then imagine the colours, patterns etc. It helps block the fear and I hope it works for you.

Thank you for your lovely reply. Love the ‘big girl pants’ idea. I had the ultrasound today and the radiologist was lovely. He said the cyst had refilled but all seems to be ok. He’ll send his report to the consultant so just to wait for that. I’m going to ask my doctors for those blood test results and will post them on here. Thanks again. 😊
