Hi All after 3 blood tests over 6 months the G.P has started me on Levothyroxine 25mcg. I went in armed with all my knowledge from you lovely people !

She has advised taking for 3 months to see how i feel and then re-check bloods.

Just wanted to say thank you so much for the help and information you have so very kindly given me. Hoping i might start to feel some sort of normal soon !

For a starter dose like 25mcg you might struggle to last 3 months without an increase.

Levothyroxine tablets don't top-up your level of thyroid hormones they replace it.

So, at the start your body recognises that you have extra thyroxine and you feel better. Then the body adjusts to the new levels and reduces the amount of thyroxine your thyroid produces, so you feel worse again. This is not a reason to give up on the Levo. It's a reason to increase the dose by 25mcg per day. This cycle of feeling better for a while then feeling worse, then raising dose should continue until you notice that the cycle of needing more then raising dose has stopped and you've reached the point where your Levo doesn't just replace your own thyroxine output, but increases your supply overall.

There may come a point where you have to fine tune your dose - e.g. you might add 25 mcg Levo, then need to reduce by 12.5mcg or increase by 12.5 mcg. Many of us use pill cutters or scalpels or hobby knives to cut 20 mcg or 25 mcg tablets into halves or quarters.
