Hi

does anyone know if low neutrophil can be connected to hashimoto?

Gp said it’s bit low but apparently has been low before and is stable.

Not heard of it before and don’t know if it’s something o should be concerned or if might be relate to my thyroid

Thanks

Kate

Hi Ralphie

I’ve had a Google for you.

‘neutrophil and hypothyroidism’

A paper has come up see below link.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

It’s just talking about using the ratio as a marker for Hashimoto’s and other autoimmune disorders. Nothing to worry about they are just trying to find ways to recognise and monitor. 😊👍

I’ve had abnormally low neutrophil on a few occasions alongside low white cell count. At the same times they were too low my thyroxine levels were too high. One occasion when I was just taking T4 levothyroxine years ago and recently taking combination treatment T4 and T3 medications. I believe with myself it’s connected to high thyroxine in my system as it correlates exactly. Neutrophils are you first defence against virus etc. white blood cells are also virus defence and help you get well. Do you get virus etc often or struggle to shake them off? The other thing to note is that people with graves/over active thyroid conditions can high low white cell count and low neutrophil. So once again high thyroxine levels. I try to keep my levels within range as much as possible.

Neutrophils are subject to some fluctuations with allergies and infections even stresss and sleep deprivation …it’s a white blood cell/immune response and body needs time to recover that said I have read autoimmune diseases can be likely cause. I do believe it also can be drug induced, are you on anything known to reduce levels?

If you’ve recently had a virus, infection, trauma/stress or sickness it can take few weeks for these levels to recover.

If GP is keeping track it maybe just coincidence of infection and this is normal response.

Hi Ralphie I have had low neutrophils going back many years. Haematology say it's just the way my blood is. I do get checked every 6 months but levels have been stable for many years. I have under active thyroid.

Thanks everyone for your replies that’s helpful to know your experiences. I’m definitely sleep deprived and stressed and possibly got cold coming but it does also sound like it can be common with hashimoto. Thanks for your help

I have had low neutrophils and I have Hashimoto's. I do think that low neutrophils may be linked with autoimmune conditions as my mother-in-law had low neutrophils but had Mixed Connective Tissue disease.
