Undiagnosed Hashimotos update.

I posted for the first time a couple of weeks back with the results my blue horizon bloods.I got some really helpful links, and came out with an understanding that I have Hashimotos, Low folate, low ferritin, low vitD and b12 on the low side.

I took the results to my G.P with My medical history hoping that they would help in some way but not very hopfull as ive had trouble before, getting them to listen.

They ran more bloods, including, for pernicious anaemia, celiacs, and rheumatoid indicators.

The G.P got back to me yesterday to let me know that I have subclinical hypothyroidism and that I require no treatment after getting advice and guidence from the leeds endo team, I have to come back in 4 months to run the bloods again. He did say that my vit D levels were really low and advised I should start supplementing myself.

And that was it. He didn't mention any of the other tests, but as your now able to see all tests/results on the online portal, I can see that they never tested for pernicious anaemia or coeliacs, and the rheumatoid came back as abnormal. As did b12, folate and ferritin. Quite annoying that all these results say abnormal/speak to dr/pick up script and he didn't even mention them, but any way, It just confirms for me that it will be a lot a self treatment.

I'm going to get a coeliac test and then cut out gluten as my next steps.

Hi Rosie,

I’m sorry to read your current experience. It’s horrible and not at all what you should expect or deserve.

I just want to add that the fact they have have considered restearing (thyroid I assume) in a few months, suggests to me if that comes back as raised too they will go ahead and trial Levothyroxine.

Did they even test antibodies this time? You should follow up with an appointment stating you wish to discuss all results essentially those marked as abnormal. And, as for the tests that haven’t been done, many things have gone wrong with mine and other forums blood tests - honestly you can make it up! So worth chasing this up too.

Hiya,Thanks for that, I will book another appointment, its so frustrating just trying to see one Dr Consistently, I booked my main dr for the consultation, but he was busy on the day so I had someone else, then someone else reviewing the results and someone different again to actually discuss them with me, it's like pulling teeth.

It is. However there can be a long term advantage to this approach. You soon learn which professionals are best for what you want, and when you request them to have your appointment they are more likely to get back to you rather than just anyone. If your surgery says you can’t request a certain professional, that’s just nonsense. It’s your right to. And, if that doesn’t work simply state in a stern voice you will not speak to anyone else.

I’m afraid you will have to get tough on advocating for yourself.

What were your results for vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 via GP test ?

As per my detailed replies you need to start self supplementing to improve vitamin levels

Starting with vitamin D, with K2

Then add magnesium

Meanwhile get full iron panel test for anaemia via Medichecks

GP should have tested for Pernicious Anaemia.

Either ask again or start supplementing

You could consider private B12 injections too

Technically GP is correct you need 2 thyroid tests at least 6 weeks apart with TSH over 5 before NHS will start Levo

Starting levothyroxine - flow chart

So very sorry to hear of all the crapsicola you’re having to deal with! Makes one want to spit, or worse! I dealt with just the same nonsense many years ago as a young mum with worsening hypo issues due to Hashimotos but my bloods were ‘within range’ so ‘go away’! Such tosh! Arm yourself with all the wonderful information available here and the great input from Admins who are more knowledgeable than any dr I have dealt with so far in my 74 years! I took a year to build up my vits and went gluten free - Vit levels improved and trusting gf is aiding my leaky gut. Take things into your own hands with the advice available here as your good health is far more important to you than any doctor! Trust things improve one step at a time!💕

For further advice and support for B12 & folate, post results on the PAS forum in the meantime and push for those PA tests before you supplement or inject.
