update on porcine vs bovine

Hi to all, I posted on here a little while ago saying I had made a mistake and ordered the bovine version of Metavive instead of the porcine I had been using with success. Instead of sending it back I decided to try it. It doesn't work for me!

I can feel myself slipping backwards (and when my eye area starts swelling, I know I'm not absorbing properly), and it's only been a very short time that I started substituting one 40mg porcine capsule with one of the bovine ones (I take 3 x 40mg porcine, or 1 x 80mg plus a 40mg). So I have had to reorder the porcine ones. So, it does make a difference, at least for me. Obviously one agrees with me more than the other.

So disappointed, I was hoping it would be ok!

It doesn't work for me either. The one and only time I used cow instead of pig I was not well. I think its because porcine is closer to human where bovine has too much T4.

This is really interesting, I hadn’t considered there may be a difference between the 2. I’ve been taking the Allergy Research one which is bovine didn’t realise you could get the porcine one in the natural glandular, can you tell me where you get yours please? I’ve not felt any better and had just concluded I needed to go on medication instead but this might be worth a try for me.

Hi Chell1, if you just type Metavive in the search box, the supplier should come up - I don't think I'm allowed to post the supplier on here?? Please pm me if you don't find it and I am more than willing to tell you where to get it online.

Not a problem naming the supplier as it isn't classed as medication just a supplement

What is this for? Is it a form of ndt?

On this forum, we reserve the term Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT) for products which have a declared thyroid hormone content.

Thanks - that’s fair. I was just interested to understand what this does?

Very difficult to answer. Some declare very obviously that they contain no hormones, neither the ones used to make cattle grow, nor thyroid hormones.

But never is it explained what they do - or are claimed to do - except in the most general terms like "helps".

It’s used in hypothyroidism. Some - Dr Roderick Lane and his clients - call it WDT (whole dessicated thyroid). Most of us use the term glandulars

I used to take porcine only but that took my FT3 too high with FT4 trailing behind. I’ve since added bovine to help raise my FT4 and levels are now more balanced but still not quite right

Dr P started me on porcine advising that this suits most people better than bovine but not all. I’m one of those who needs FT4 to be at least 50% through ref range when FT3 is high otherwise I get jittery and anxious and struggle with weight management. Porcine alone, in that sense, doesn’t work for me but a very high FT3 with much lower FT4 would be fine for some and this just demonstrates how we all have different body requirements

Swapping one 40mg of porcine for one of bovine will never work because they’re quite different, so it’s not a matter of: I know I’m not absorbing properly, it’s that you’ve discovered bovine alone doesn’t have the right balance of what you need. That’s not to say you don’t have an absorption issue, you very possibly do - hypos tend to - making it likely you don’t absorb anything properly, not just bovine forms of glandulars

I’m currently on:

Met ll x 1.5 = Met l x 3

Met lV x 1.5 = Met lll x3

Split over am and bedtime, with a view to adding Met lll (it’s half the strength of Met lV) over a four week period by taking just a sprinkle extra/day. For me, going too fast upsets sleep

I'm one of those who do fine with a higher FT3 and lower FT4. perhaps that was the problem, raising my FT4 too much (??)..... I probably shouldn't have rocked the boat by trying the bovine, seeing it was there, I did! 😊
