NDT Armour dosing

I’m 2.5 months into Armour treatment, now adjusting to 1/2 grain at 6am and 1/4 grain an hour after lunch.

Insomnia is one of my worse symptoms, I take 20mg of amitriptyline which has worked well for the last year, I sleep 12-7am.

Since the latest Armour dose increase my insomnia has worsened and I’m wondering if it’s the timing of my afternoon dose. I usually take it around 2pm.

I’ve noticed that at weekends I have my 6am dose and sleep in. I tend to have a late big breakfast and one hour later take my 2nd dose around midday. I’m sleeping better on these days!

Does anyone else do this please and take 2nd dose around midday?

Tips, advice, experiences welcome, thank you!

Hi, I notice you said that on the weekends after your big breakfast, you take your second dose an hour after you eat. Meds are to be taken 1hr before or 2hrs after eating. Possibly you are sleeping better those days as you are not getting the full effect of the Armour. I have been on some form of NDT for 30yrs & adhere to the timing. For me, I have never split my NDT - everyone is different.

My prescription says one hour apart from food, drink, supplements (water ok). I do the same process if I take it at midday or 2ish.

It's a case of trial and error to find out what best suits you as we are all different. Some people even take it with food, others split it, some take it at bedtime and even in the early hours of the morning. I personally take my NDT in one go in the morning making sure it is 2 hours away from other meds and usually at least one hour away from food and drinks except water.

It should also be taken at least 4 hours away from iron tablets, calcium and multi-vitamins (in case you maybe taking them) as they affect absorption ~Good Luck~

I used to but found it worked better taking it all first thing with a glass of water. Empty tummy. Then breakfast an hour later. It might be you don't need to split it up. You might find your sleep improves too.

Taking your midday dose only an hour after weekend breakfast is too soon because your tummy won't have emptied. It should be 3hrs after eating. So you are probably getting less from this lunchtime Armour dose. I'd try it all first thing.

3/4 grain is quite a low dose I think; be interesting to see what your next tests show but maybe the insomnia will improve on a higher dose if that's your plan?

Edit to add: the improvement at the weekend is a puzzle, is it definitely due to different NDT dosing? So many thinks can afgect sleep, e.g. what and when you eat your evening meal, maybe you're more relaxed?

For me, I suspect myadrenal issues, maybe via the route of poor blood sugar control, affect my sleep.

Hope you find some answers; it's miserable when you can't sleep.
