t3 fever?!

Mag999 profile image
9 Replies

I’ve been on 5 mcg liothyronine and 50 levothyroxine for 7 weeks now, initially felt much better but now feel feverish most of day worse in evenings, headache, irritability+++ and fatigue. This has been for past 10 days. I did have some kind of cold virus a few weeks ago.

Due for blood test this week

I wonder if body has got used to addition of t3 and it’s not quite enough? I wondered what average liothyronine dose is once stable

Thanks!

You were on 100mcg Levo I believe before adding T3. Some Endo's seem to drop levo by 50mcgs which is often too much, especially if you have only added 5mcgs T3.

I would strongly suspect that you have gone hypo, more so than you were before. Your blood test will be interesting.

Combinations doses do vary between individuals but somewhere in the range of 75-125mcgs Levo + 5-15 mcgs T3 suit most people.

Ok thanks that makes sense, hopefully the bloods will help

I was on 100mcg levo only and my ft4 was only 60% through range Even with that ft4 result the endo reduced my levo dose by 50mcg per day when they added in t3. That was too big a reduction and it took me a long time to slow adjust levo and lio t3 doses to find what suited. I take 100 levo and 7.5 lio t3 daily.

My ft4 was high on 100mcg levothyroxine, it was the t3 which just didn’t really shift hence trialling the lio but maybe dropping to 50 was a bit drastic.

Thanks for reply it all helps me understand better why I’m so up and down!

strongly recommend you get tested now

Probably only needed to reduce levothyroxine to 75mcg

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

On T3 - day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day with last dose 8-12 hours before test

So split 5mcg as 2 x 2.5mcg

I am trialling T3 as well and my T4 was at 80% or so when I started so it was clear (like you by the look of it) that I was not converting well. Eight weeks in, my TSH became suppressed more than my docs liked so it was suggested I reduce to 75 of levo every other day. I tried that for a week and it messed up my sleep, energy levels etc so I am going to try reducing to 82.5 daily as suggested on the forum. Hoping to get back to how good I felt on 100mcg levo and 7.5 of T3. We'll see. I was going great guns there for a while :( But I can't imagine what halving the dose of levo would have done. Crikey.

Yes it seemed sensible at the time but I’m on the floor🤣 helpful to know doses that work for other people hope you find your levels soon, it’s such a palaver especially the waiting in between.

COVID-19 in early 2021 coupled with lack of testing led to a long period of thyrotoxicosis, for me, although raised body temperature wasn't a symptom. Sometimes signs and symptoms are clear as day, other times less so. Correct interpretation of adequate testing should be acted on, but it can be difficult to get those tests and avoid those entrusted with our care being heavy handed -- my TSH has gone from suppressed to 4.3, with me expected to wait seven weeks to see new GP, who tries to be helpful, but doesn't know a great deal about thyroid issues (e.g. TSH remaining suppressed after ceasing source of T3).
