how to obtain NDT in UK

Greenwichgal profile image
21 Replies

I currently live in the USA but will be moving to the UK. I have successfully managed my hypothyroidism, with NDT, for many years. Formerly, I did not do well on levothyroxine.

Since I will not be able to get prescriptions filled from the US anymore, I am making preliminary enquiries about how I would go about continuing my successful management of my condition, from the UK. If anyone can explain to me what is required to get NDT there, I would be grateful.

Thank you in advance.

Legally, you can import your own (for yourself and members of your household).

But as it is not an approved/licenced medicine in the UK, it is not readily available here. And getting a prescription can be difficult.

If it were possible for you to continue to get it prescribed in the USA and sent over, that might be the best option.

I agree. I moved to the EU from the states 8 years ago. My US doctor sends my NDT prescription to my son in the states, then he repackages and mails it all to me.

Helvella has said it all - it's getting increasingly difficult to find a doctor who will prescribe NDT in the UK so many of us import it without a prescription - not ideal but necessary for our wellbeing! Stock up as much as you are able before leaving the USA as I doubt your current doctor will prescribe it once you have departed.

I am based in Belgium but soend a lot of time in the UK as I am British. I used to get Armour in Belgium froma pharmacy but it became harder and harder and more and more expensive. Last time I got it in Belgium the pharmacist felt so sorry for me as it was so pricey that he forgo his cut! Ironically I now order it from the US. A US naturopathic doctor in London recommended this route. You don’t need a prescription and they will deliver to the U.K. (but not to Belgium for some reason). The service takes about 2 weeks and you do need to pay import duty. The price has gone up over the years but I, personally, don’t know any other way of getting Armour (which suits me) without a prescription . The company is [ name of source redacted ]. Hope that helps. Maybe there are other ways now in the UK.

Please:

If you want to ask about sources, ask a brand new question.

Don't just tag on "me too" because that can lead to convoluted confusing threads of replies.

If you have already sent a Private Message asking someone, there usually isn't much reason to add a reply saying that is what you have done.

I'm going to add our standard warning message here and tag in anyone who has requested the source for NDT. Be aware that it is risky buying any medicine without a prescription. Do read the following and follow the instructions to contact an admin before you purchase to find out if they have any information about that source.

When you receive a message with a recommendation, please do not assume it is genuine.

Scammers are joining the forum on a very regular basis and messaging members with their assertions that they have successfully purchased xyz medication from zyx source.

First, check the profile of the member that sent you the message. Are they a long term member with an active forum posting history? Or are they a recently joined member with little or no posting history?

Once you have what you think may be a genuine recommendation, please message a forum admin to ask whether the admin team have any feedback on the source you've been given.

Admins are not allowed to recommend sources, but we can tell you what, if any, feedback we've received about the source you've been given.

⚠️ Don't part with your much needed money until you are as sure as you can be that the source is genuine.

Scammers often join the forum and post a 'fake' story about their thyroid journey, that includes mention of self sourcing their thyroid meds. This is to encourage members to ask them where they purchase their medication without prescription.

Thank you for this warning. I just heard via a moving to uk group that NDT isn’t prescribed on NHS and I then became aware of there being potential problems obtaining it.

Could you please message me too as I am the original poster asking the question. Thanks

There are private doctors who will prescribe but you need to pick from quite a limited list, some do virtual consultations so distance isn't always an issue.

Email info@thyroiduk.org for a list and look out for those who prescribe NDT or email and ask them.

Roseway Labs offer a prescribing service and I believe they do offer NDT although I'm not sure which brands. They also compound meds. Perhaps drop them an email to work out cost as its not cheap at all depending on brand. rosewaylabs.com/?fbclid=IwA...

Sadly, we need to add this to most posts asking about sources of medicines.

Are you covered by a medical insurance that is recognised in the UK and prepared to go Private this then opens up many more avenues to choose from.

If you contact Thyroid UK - thyroiduk.org - the charity who support this forum they can email you a list of specialist doctors - both NHS and Private - who can and will prescribe Armour privately as getting any brand of NDT prescribed through the NHS is near impossible.

Many of us are forced to self medicate and we are not allowed to ' openly ' discuss on this open forum from whom we buy our NDT but can contact you by Private Messages - and then your paper plane icon above lights up telling you there is a PM for you.

You can also ask forum members for feedback on a certain doctor you may wish to see - and there again - replies will be through PMs.

I'd suggest you bring sufficient Armour with you - so with everything else gong on - it's one issue that is not ' an urgent ' upon arrival.

Thank you so much for this explanation. I did fully expect to have to get private insurance.

Ok then - it should be relatively easy especially if settled on your dose and just wanting to ' roll on ' with things and not needing a specialist's input - where will you be living ?

I also linked you into another post talking about Roseway Labs - did you find that - if not - no worries as Roseway are listed within the Thyroid UK website :

and I sent you a PM whereby the chat button above lights up - did you get that ?
